Any Hanukkah, Christmas or New Years traditions you have that you would like to share ![]()
I’d love to hear them.
Eat lots then feel sick. Do it every year. ![]()
I like Jerseygirl’s traditions. Lol.
Spend time with pets… uh family, I guess. Haha.
Also dress up the Pit Bull and rats in the most ridiculous outfits and take pictures of them. ![]()
Food and presents. Yup.
The Christmas tradition in America for Jewish people is eating Chinese food. (Take out or go to a restaurant, either is good.) ![]()

What a coincidence, same for Chinese people too ![]()
Also, reminds me of A Christmas Story – hilarious!
For the past few years my family has gone out hiking (just a day trip) the day after Christmas…I have no idea why, but apparently it’s something we do now, haha.
Since my mom became vegetarian, as well, a couple years ago (I’ve been for 6) we skip the big family Christmas dinner and sit at home and eat a TON of the spiciest Indian food in town and watch movies
my parents are split so I do each on a different day. when I go to my dads I make this hashbrowns surprise for brunch and then we go to a family friends for dinner.
Well since I’m now in a serious relationship my traditions have changed slightly. My boyfriend’s aunt takes his whole family to outback steakhouse as her gift on Christmas eve. Then we drive back to my parents (1 hour apart) for Christmas eve games. Spend the night, have cinnamon rolls for breakfast and open a slew of gifts. Then we get dressed up and pack up our goodies and go back to his aunts house for a chicken kiav dinner. His family is very food-orientated. haha where as mine is with gift giving. Most of us like giving gifts more than receiving
I miss the days of staying in with the family but now I have 2 families!
Well, when I was in Canada, we always dressed up on Christmas, cuz we usually didn’t get any other reasons to all year
Then have breakfast, and coffee with Bailey’s, then open presents.
Now that I am married int eh states,w e drive down to my hubby’s mom’s, do dinner, watch movies all day. Still fun
I did bring the tradition of bailey’s in the coffee down with me though ![]()
Mine is now to watch The Christmas Bunny every year!!! I am now watching it on Netflix and it is soooo cute!!! A little orphan girl nurses a little injured lop back to health with the help of the Bunny Lady… her bunny shelter is covered with every rabbit breed you can think of! It is just so darn cute!! It is kind of a kid’s movie but I mean, this is a bunny forum and it is a bunny movie haha. The Bunny Lady is even bunny smart! Saying things like cecotropes and no alfalfa. Great movie! Must watch of ALL of you!!!!
ok, beware. It is a sad movie. Extremely cute but really sad.
i’m going to sleep in till noon,, then head out to South Mountain for some biking

My mom always buys me tofurkey loafs since I’m a vegetarian too. Haha.
We always do St. Nick’s (Norwegian tradition), where you put out your boots the night before December 6th and your parents fill them with candy, clementines, and a small gift. My sister and I are WAY too old for that now but we still do something similar for fun. My grandparents always send us this sausage, cheese, and dessert basket lol. Christmas Eve we celebrate with extended family and Christmas day at grandma and grandpa’s farm with my aunt, uncle (and his wife and children) on my mom’s side, and my immediate family. Of course lots of food and presents. I just love the warm feeling, cheesy I know.
I just love the warm feeling, cheesy I know.
Not cheesy at all. It’s what it’s all about in my book.
I love having my siblings kids about. It’s so great to see their excitement at Christmas.
hopefully your ride wont be too muddy on the mountain then longhairmike! Rain wont stop pouring where I am!!!
When I was a youngster we always had presents open on Christmas Eve. I don’t recall what we did on the day, usually some kind of nice dinner, although probably not turkey as we’d done that on Thanksgiving and were tired of it. Most likely we went to an aunt’s house.
I used to love to decorate the house for Christmas and New Years’, but I have no room or time for it this last few years. Bit of a humbug that.
New Years’ carried only one caveat. There was NO arguing allowed because my dad believed that would lead to discord all the following year. Ironically, the year my mom passed away we broke that rule. I never forgot that.
Lol…I could do with a huge order of potstickers and steamed rice about now…been up with the new puppy every night for 8 straight days….I am a real limp noodle today. 17 hours a day of no sleep makes MimzMum a cranky meemaw. >_<
Ok ok I guess we do or did have some tradition. My mom had this old recipe for a cheese and egg strata. It is a sorta labor intensive dish and needs to refrigerate overnight to set before you can bake it. So Mom would make the strata Christmas Eve after church. Then when we woke up on Christmas morning the strata would bake while everyone opened presents. By the time presents were opened the strata would be done and we would have breakfast. My mom has 3 sisters and a brother, and every year one of them took a turn having the whole family over for Christmas dinner. Considering there are 12 grand kids total in the family, that is a pretty big ordeal.
After Joe and I got married, I burned bridges with my extended family. But my moms boyfriend at the time had a pretty nice family whom we absolutely loved. So My husband and I would go to my moms for Christmas eve mass, then exchange gifts with her, her bf, and my sister. Then my husband and I would spend most of Christmas day with just the two of us. I would bake us a mini-strata for breakfast. Later in the day we would meet up with my mom and her crew again with her bfs family for Christmas dinner.
My mom and her bf split up over the summer. Which is pretty sad. The grand kids in my extended family are all grown and most have their own families now. My sister is the youngest grandchild and she is 22. So none of her siblings wanted to do the big family get together this year since they have stuff going on with their own growing families. My sister and I are trying to plan something in secret for my mom. We are thinking she can sneak the gifts into her car and “take mom out for Christmas breakfast” meaning bring her to my house where I can have breakfast ready and we can spend it together. It is getting difficult because we have not set any plans in stone yet and mom keeps bringing it up.
Tequila.
My parents are fun. hahahaha
Angie you just reminded me of a new tradition I am starting… my newly found love of spiked egg nog. I just found a delicious recipe online and made my first batch ever of egg nog! And instead of using rum, I used whiskey and it was oh so gooooood. I made 3 servings worth and the entire thing was gone! It tasted so much better than store bought egg nog, especially since I was using eggs straight from our backyard chickens!
And on Christmas Eve, we open one present, a Christmas ornament to put on the tree. Every year is a new ornament and can symbolize what happened that year or our favorite something… maybe mine might be a bunny this year
And my family has a special guest for Christmas dinner… my parents client (my dad is an accountant and keeps really good relations with his clients) and she is a 99 year old woman who will be alone for Christmas dinner so we invited her to join!
mmmm egg nog!! my stomach is sensitive to sugar so I can only have a small cup of it (spiked or not =P) before my tummy starts hurting. I love it so much though *lip quiver*
I wonder… my sister is lactose intolerant so I am going to make a soy egg nog… I wonder if this one could work for you too! Because it is a vanilla soy, I would have to use less sugar because the vanilla is a sweet tasting soy milk.
I love Oberweiss egg nog spiked with butterscotch schnapps. MmmmmMMMMMMmmmmMMMM!
Oh.My.God. Did you just say butterscotch schnapps? wow, need to try this now…
Yes I did. My favorite is DeKuyper Buttershots. It is very tasty and not too expensive. Hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps sounds good. But sometimes peppermint flavored stuff can be a little too strong for me.
Go to my Uncle’s house with my dad. My aunt makes Lumpia and I go into a food coma from eating too much of it.
This year, I want to drink and get buzzed, hahah.

I have a bottle at home, haha. I made Butterbeer ![]()
Joyfull — you do have to have the right consistency of peppermint, but luckily the schnapps is not too strong, but the apple cider/rum is truly my favorite, especially the apple cider from Trader Joes!
Chacha — seriously, nothing is better than the food coma you get once a year hehe
No exciting traditions. I usually spend Christmas Eve watching movies and pigging out on junk food with Ricky. We always open one gift Christmas Eve. Christmas morning (after the bunnies are fed and have their gifts, of course) we open our gifts from each other and then go to Mom’s for the afternoon and have supper with my sister’s family and my grandparents. We all open gifts after supper and then have dessert and coffee. Then boxing day we get together with Ricky’s family (just his sisters since his parents are deceased) and then I go out the barn to give Winnie her present. Pretty boring but we have a nice, relaxing Christmas and I like it that way. ![]()
Oh my friends this reminds me of when my son was small. I bought some legos. I put them out after he fell asleep. The next morning we got up
You should have seen his face light up. He said Santa he came he really came. Gosh I wish I had a pic of that.
Also my Dad had some to visit with his wife one year. AFter they had left to go home Brandon saw an older cadillac with an open trailer behind it. Brandon pointed and said look theres santa claus with his sleigh. rofl.
When I was younger I got to open 1 present on xmas eve. Then we would go to grandmas house.
We often see a movie on Christmas. We have a small family, so after opening a few presents we get bored and decide to see a movie after dinner. This year I’m thinking Muppets!
Apple cider, with spiced rum and cinnamon schnapps. Awesomeness.
oooo now I am totally going to have to try spiked apple cider with the cinnamon schnapps! Man talks about these yummy drinks is making my mouth water!
LOL – how did this thread turn into a Holiday Libation Thread :~)
My mother used to make the homemade Egg Nog when I was younger and it was incredible…the stuff they sell in the grocery stores, that is not egg nog!!!
Well, I grew up with a few. We always ate red and green m&m out of a Christmas tin while listening to Christmas music to put up our tree and decorate it. We also did our Christmas dinner and opened presents on Christmas Eve. These are still things I do with my family now. This year will be a little different as we are going to spend Christmas with my in-laws.

Ahaha, I have no problems with a holiday libations thread
. So many ideas to try out…
Sarita, how did your mom make egg nog? I want to perfect it so badly!
I’m not sure Tipsy but I will find out – I know she still as the recipe.
EEK! You are my egg nog hero! And my dad came up with a new name for soy egg nog (for my sister)… snog hehe.
Tipsy, HHAHAHAHA snog.. xD it means something completely different in England
Muhohooho ![]()
uh oh… do I want to know what it means… wait I think I might know, and I am actually laughing at myself for finding it out this way… Harry Potter. Does Snogging mean making out? hahahahahaha I hope I am right, then it only means that if you drink enough of my egg snog, then you might end up snogging someone at the end of the night! Kapow! oh catch phrase.
Schnapps….hubby introduced me to apple barrel schnapps when we first met. Haven’t had it in years.
My folks were not big drinkers but we actually all had a silver gin fizz on Christmas morning…I remember that now. Being French there was always wine at the table, even when I was a child. Oddly enough…I guess we saw it as part of the food…I’ve never had problems with drinking.
And who doesn’t have a wee bit of champagne on New Years’?
Would love to see that nog recipe. I can’t stand store bought….yuck!
Snogging means Kissing in Brittan.
My folks allowed us to have a small bit of wine and champagne during special events like Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas dinner, New Years, and the like once we were like 18.
18 was legal age where I grew up in Canada lol. I was allowed any amount I wanted ![]()
Okay so here is my mom’s eggnog recipe – she wanted me to warn that this is an old recipe before there were warnings for using raw eggs…however if you raise your own chickens I don’t think these warnings are going to apply to you…(Tipsy).
She says this makes alot and it’s better if you make it 2 to 3 days ahead.
Beat 12 egg whites until stiff – add 1/2 cup sugar.
Beat egg yolks, add one cup sugar, 1/4 tsp. salt. Combine eggs.
Stir until blended. Add 1 quart heavy cream whipped, and 1 quart milk.
Add 1/5 Brandy and mix with slotted spoon.
As you can see by this recipe, it’s pretty darn decadent.
Wow Sarita!! Thanks soooo much, and tell your mom thank you too! I so appreciate it! The stuff I made told me to make (for 6 servings of 1 cup each) 4 eggs, to be used, per 1 cup of milk… just didnt seem right. But using the Brandy sounds oh so wonderful! I cannot wait for Christmas!!
I’m actually not going home for the holidays this year, my parents aren’t thrilled with me about it but I’m poor.. But my boyfriend and I will do presents (around a cardboard bunny safe tree, heh) and probably large quantities of pie. Also some egg snog (heh, thanks for that), grog, and maybe some mulled wine if I feel like using my stove. For New Year’s we always get all snazzy and go out to dinner and dancing.
Kate Monster — There is actually some really yummy egg snog at the grocery store my parents always get to make their coffees with. I actually like it, I dont really like soy milk products from Silk, but this soy egg nog is actually really good!
Baileys. Yum. In a small glass. Or on ice. Or in coffee! (getting thirsty now….)
I just tried Lactaid Egg Nog and it was very good. After I thought I was being healthy because I am lactose intolerant so tried it for that, I read the ingredients. Sooooo much sugar and cream. No wonder it was tasty. Not spiked however. Put it in my morning coffee. ![]()
I am really enjoying reading these posts hehehe. Is it bad that I crave a gin and tonic with lime every time I read this topic?
My mother makes Pizzelle Cookies & Biscotti Cookies from my grandmother’s recipes every year. I look forward to that.

Awww that is soo sweet!
Sorry about the late reply, i just found this post…lol
eek Pizzelle cookies! mmmm, today my sister and I will be making chex mix, gluten free chex mix, gingerbread firetrucks (thats all we have, I was going to get some holiday shapes but my mom couldve sworn she had some but, alas, she only has firetrucks) and fruitcake for my dad!
My family has never celebrated the holidays, given they are Witnesses. But, my only holiday traditions since I have left home, since I didn’t follow their religion, are to try to donate what I can to the homeless (even one food dish is most welcome to them) so they can enjoy their holidays. I don’t need big dinners, or presents, though I may buy something for the animals. ![]()

I agree with Sir Thumpsey – this is so nice. I think this time of the year elderly people are so often forgotten. That is so nice that your father has invited her to join you for Christmas :~)
