I’m having a hard time keeping up with Porky’s claw trimming needs.
I didn’t have these issues with other bunnies’ claws I’ve done in the past, but Porky is different. First off, he doesn’t go into a very deep trance. he only sort of trances and will rouse from it as soon as he notices that I’m doing his claws. My other bunnies have always stayed completely still when tranced.
Second, he has very darkly pigmented claws. All pervious bunnies have had light claws so I could see the quick. I was able to do the light colored claws much faster since I could clearly see I wasn’t past the quick. Also, I could cut the claws as short as possible making the need to do it less freaquent, which I can’t do with Porky since I have to leave a safety margin since I can’t actually see the quick.
Finally, to make it extra complicated, Porky has the thickest fur on his feet of any pet bunny I’ve ever seen. It’s like the stuff you see on pictures of snowshoe hares. Getting all the fluff parted so I can get at the claws make it take that much longer.
I’m lucky if with everything I manage to get half his toes done per session. I’d love to pass this chore along to someone who could do it faster, more efficiently and with less stress for Porky (he is unusually out going and doesn’t mind meeting new people and travel so going would add stress.) If I lived in San Francisco I would very gladdly take Porky to Save-A-Bunny for the mani-pedi services, but I live in Northern NJ just outside of NYC.
I’m not sure taking him to a regular pet groomer would be a good idea. There would be dogs there, and generally dogs see bunnies as a yummy snack. Plus, would any of the groomers be likely to have much more bunny experience than I do? It’s not like I’m generally inexperience at clipping bunny claws, I have experience, Porky is just extra difficult.
Anyone know of a bunny day spa in NJ?
