› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › do you ever wonder about your bun’s past?
I do a lot. My Bridge bunny was already 2-3 years old when I adopted him. I still wonder what his previous home was like and what he was like as a baby. I really wish there was someway I could like find his old home and ask them for pics of him as a baby haha. Wilbur I got at 8-10 weeks, so I don’t really wonder about that much. Totoro was found a stray with bott flies in his neck, bott flies are only found in the very southern part of the United States and warmer climate countries. So how in the heck did he get them? Where did he come from? I just wish I knew these things! The humane society found him as a baby but by the time I adopted him he was already full grown, I also wish they had given me baby pics. Haha sorry if this all sounds crazy ![]()
You actually just made me think about it! I’ve had thumper since she was 6 weeks old but I adopted roscoe in April and the rescue said he was 2.. Now I’m really wondering what his life was like before me lol! Hope it wasn’t too bad :/
I agree, I think about it once in a while too especially with Milo. We adopted him at about 1.5 years, with his incisors already removed. The people at the shelter told us that when they picked him up he was extremely malnourished due to his horribly overgrown and maloccluded teeth, and probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer since he couldn’t eat properly
. By the time we adopted him he was at a healthy weight, but was unsociable and jumpy for the first couple of months (though he now demands pets as much as Peppy) so I kind of wonder what kind of human interaction (or lack thereof) he had before. We’re a little more clear on Peppy…she was a “used” Easter bunny given to two little boys who shortly lost interest…her picture on Craigslist looked like she was kept inside, but she had an infection and mites when we got her too. We got Tammo and Remy pretty young, so we’re pretty clear on them. I also wish that I had baby pictures of Peppy and Milo, but I’m happy in knowing that they have a good home now
.
Yep – both mine are rescues. Powder is completely unknown, age guessed at 4 years when we got him… the people who left him at the shelter gave ZERO info on him, not a birthdate, nothing. He’s a sweet heart though. Stickers came from a neglected home, I *think* she was a mentally disabled child’s pet, we got her at around 4 months old and the poor little thing had sticker glue all over her neck from where the kid put stickers onto her fur, the vet had to shave it off for us. She’s very skittish about handling, but after what she had to go through, I can’t blame her… and she came in the tiniest pet store cage that could barely let her flop in it and she’s a mini-rex! Wish I knew their backgrounds, but I know their futures – spoiled rotten brats. ![]()
I got Hazel off of Craigslist from a young woman who had 6 rabbits; her parents owned a rabbitry and she had been showing rabbits for her whole life. She was moving and needed to downsize her pets. All I know is that Hazel was shown a lot (she has an ear tattoo and can do show poses and the whole bit), traveled, and had had a litter. The woman said she was let out of her cage at night to run around the bedroom, but that’s all I know. And that she fed her alfalfa everything lol. I don’t think she was mistreated at all though; Hazel is a very friendly bun and easy to handle (although she isn’t that fond of being picked up – typical). But I am definitely glad that she is all mine now – spayed and spoiled, of course. She brings so much joy to my life and home.
I “rescued” mine from a horrible pet store, all I know is that he was young and kept in a tiny cage in a corner on top of a bunch of empty cages, with no food or water and when I went up to his cage he immediately ran up to me and nudged my fingers with his nose, there was no way I could leave him there. D:
The shop owner taped him up in the box he came in, which was about the size of 2 stacks of computer paper, and I left with him. As soon as I got in the car I ripped off that tape and rubbed his ears while we drove home.
Now he is my spoiled rotten boy, and even if he is rotten sometimes I will never let him be neglected again.
I’m glad I’m not the only one!
it is frustrating though, there’s no way to know
I know Harvey and Jacks pasts more or less, execept Harvey’s age. Harvey was loved very much, his previous owner just couldn’t have him anymore. Jack was an easter bunny. Now they are spoiled brats. I know all about where Goosey, our newest family member, a 12 year old maine coon cat, came from too. Lyra’s story is the one I wonder about. She was our only ‘planned’ pet, a cat we got from a shelter. They estimated her at about a year old. The shelter volunteers had named her Rain, cuz they found her in a parking lot in the pouring rain, bursting at the seams pregnant. So I wonder how she ended up in that parking lot and what her life was like before that. She took to being our owner immediately, flopping down in the middle of the living room floor and purring louder than I’ve ever heard a cat purr before. She also found escape routes, quickly, too. She has so many odd behaviours, I’m torn between thinking she was somebody’s lovey who got out because she was in heat and thinking she was a stray.
I thought I was kinda nuts for wondering about Lyra as much as I do – glad to see I’m in good company ![]()
Chacha is from a breeder. For 8 weeks of her life, she lived in a small wirebottom cage, with her mommy OK (yes, her birth mommy’s name is OK… how sad IMO) and her siblings. I fell in love with the 5 week old Chacha. She looked so sweet. She IS sweet, just with a diva attitude now ![]()
I certainly do. Mr. Bunny was between 6 months and a year old when I got him. He was a hutch bunny for most of that time, and his previous owner gave him and his brother to the shelter when they moved. I would love to find out what happened to his brother. In hindsight, I really wish that I had adopted his brother too – they were a bonded pair that was temporarily separated for their neuter surgeries, and his brother was still recovering.
Ms. Rabbit has a very interesting past. She was probably around 4-6 months old when I got her. She had a good home with loving humans and a bonded bunny friend before their house burned down. Her bonded bunny friend was killed in the fire, and her previous owners had to surrender her. She’s the type of bunny who’s lost without another bunny, so she was still visibly depressed when I got her (over a month after she arrived at the shelter). I’m sure that her previous owners still think about her and her bonded friend. I’d love to know who they are so that I could tell them their bunny is in a good home.
I do too. I got Sammykins when she was a baby also, but I suspected something happened to make her so growly and upset at being held, and not liking heights. I heard she’d “gone to a birthday party and just loved the children and attention there” before I met her, and I suspect she got traumatized by it instead. sigh. You are so not crazy for wondering. Finding out a bunny’s history can often help us know what not to do to upset them, or what they need to overcome.
I do.
Toffee was surrendered to the animal shelter along w/her bonded female friend and I have no idea what their relationship was (Twizzler has gone to the bridge) but the people who surrendered them said they were about 8 weeks old – no way they were much older than that – I suspect either the shelter got the info wrong or the owners were trying to make them younger so they would be more adoptable. I’m sure they were from a backyard breeder initially as they were/are mixes of some kind.
Peaches & Peppermint were strays and I suspect that Peaches was the mom and Peppermint is her son…although I cannot know for sure – obviously they escaped or were set free. Hard to know but they are very shy quiet rabbits and I worry if one leaves and the other is alone.
Bobby was dumped at a friends guinea pig rescue in his cage. He was severely malnourished because he had very bad dental problems – the owners obviously weren’t willing to take him to the vet. Oh well, their loss, my gain.
I don’t wonder too much about Olive’s past life as she came from a breeder. I do wonder about Simon, though. He was transferred from another local shelter about an hour away and they estimated he was about 2-4 months old (vet thinks he’s closer to four months old, and I agree). I just wonder what his circumstances were and hope that he was cared for properly before he came to me.
I wonder about Thumper’s past a lot. I know the lady I got him from cared about him deeply and I still send picture updates about him to her sometimes. She just didn’t have the space or the money to take care of him, since he was dropped off on her doorstep in a box with 6 other bunnies, all different breeds, all malnourished. I wonder what it was like for him before that and it makes me sad
I don’t wonder about Penelope’s past too much because she was bought from a pet store at a very young age, but I do think about what her future would have been like if it I hadn’t of bought her. Would the person who got her be willing to pay for the eye removal surgery or would the infection have taken over? Also, would they have fixed her? If not she wouldn’t have lived very long, because when I took her in to get fixed, she had the very beginning of uterine cancer. Maybe someone very responsible would have bought her and she would have the same type of life she has now, maybe not. All I know is I’m glad I got her, even if she has cost me money out the wazoo lol
It is interesting reading these. So glad these bunnies with not so good pasts are being loved and taken care of well now ![]()
Usako had a criminal juvenile record, but it was sealed after she was spayed…
I wonder about Olivia’s past but it’s sort of a situation where I probably don’t want to know. I got her from a pet store because I saw her there and she looked so horribly depressed, she had an eye infection and was in a tiny glass tank so small she could barely lay down comfortably. I asked the pet store guy about her and he said she was around 1 year old. She was at the pet store and had babies and was then bought by someone who returned her and was at the pet store for a while before I bought her. I suspect the people who had her were very rough with her or possibly had kids who tormented her. It took her a very long time to learn to trust me and she still has a lot of aggression and stress issues. I get honked at, growled at and pummeled on a daily basis. I think she’s scarred for life and will always have some aggression. But that’s okay, I love my little princess as is.
She can also be a real sweetheart at times.
lol, Mike ![]()
Stickerbunny- I wondered about the name “Stickers”. Now it makes sense.
That’s so sad about Ms. Rabbit.
I’m so glad she has you and Mr. Bunny now. A happy ending.
