So my two bunns have been going CRAZY now that it’s fall.  I don’t know why but they want to chew every single thing, everything! and they are being too crafty and destroying furniture and eating walls and it is maddness over here. They have a bunch of toys and a cottontail cottage and a whole (500sq’) apartment to run around in. At night time they get too crazy with the kitties the bunns go in the bathroom. When leave during the day they are baby gated in the kitchen/dining room. They have chewed threw two gates and are currently working really hard on this one.

Anyway, my husband is exhausted and tired of buying new furniture and stuff… so, we are thinking of a condo. I would love to build one but we dont have the space, tools, or resources. I have seen some amazing bookshelf/ armoire condos but I haven’t been able to find any that would take minimal retooling. Plus space is a major issue. Our apartment is small and every bit of furniture is on display. I have been looking at pet store hutches because i don’t know what else to do. things like this:

        any ideas?

A hutch isn’t enough space for 1 rabbit, let alone 2. At early morning and night, rabbits tend to go crazy, its their active time. Bunny 500’s, binkies, and generally funny bunnyness ensues. You might be seeing it more since dusk is coming so much earlier than before? Not sure.

They are chewing through gates like this?? http://www.evenflo.com/product.aspx?id=298

How many pellets do they get?

yes, even that gate! they are mad little chewers.
hmmm. even a big hutch? for parts of the day? they have eaten almost through the legs of our dining room chairs, book shelves, coffee tables, the walls- oh god the walls. I don’t know what to do. a hutch sounded like such a nice fix…

oh, they get a quarter cup of pellets twice a day to share. and many greens and all the hays they want. Should they be getting less pellets? more? do you think they’re hungry and need to eat everything because of that?

aaah. okay my husband and i have just decided to convert most of a wall into a nic cube cage. I think the nic cubes are ugly but we will do our best. I will post photos when commplete…

You can get baby gates that have holes that are simply too small for a rabbit to get their mouth on. Stickers chews through any gate she can get her teeth on, but I got ones with TINY holes and she can’t get a grip to chew it. Also, I have a solid plastic cabinet door I converted into a gate, I just lean something heavy against it and they can’t push it and it’s flat and solid, so no chewing. NIC condos are good too though.

The hutch you showed was as big as a 2×4 NIC condo, I don’t think that’s to small.

Maybe you could get two x-pens and put them in the kitchen or something? I also have a tiny less than 550 sq ft apartment. I have his cage in the kitchen and have an x-pen on the way to add onto it, its not pretty, but its better than having him rip up my carpets.

but I will say if they chew through wood I wouldn’t get a wooden condo. When my bunny was in a hutch she almost chewed right through the door.

it looks great not ugly at all! Mine is ugly – it is blue (they were on clearance for 1/2 the price of the black)!

Looks great! Only thing I can think of is adding a top to it. Bunnies could jump over that edge from that top shelf easily
