  I was at Petsmart today getting some more seagrass twists and some timothy hay for the little bun when I noticed that they have very interesting varieties I have never seen before! They had timothy hay with mango bits, cranberry, marigolds, herbs like basil parsley and rose petals, and another I forgot. They say these special things on the back like the cranberry promotes good heart health and the mango promotes good immune system, but I would think that is too much sugar, isnt it?? But what about the marigold? That is ok right? And the herb mix sounds delicious! BTW it is all dried.
  
  Oh yeah the other was garden veggies with carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin seeds, and popped milo… now that I am not sure about feeding to a bunny.

  Yeah I’ve seen that. Its Kaytee brand right? I personally wouldn’t get it because I don’t think Kaytee is nearly the quality of oxbow or others, but I do buy the oxbow botanical occasionally and sprinkle a little over their regular timothy, it has a lot of yummy stuff that doesn’t need to be monitored like the mango and cranberry etc. http://store.binkybunny.com/botanical-hay–oxbow-p97.aspx

  It was just kind of a last minute stop. Once I get more money I can get a better quality hay for her, but it was just kind of odd, promoting all these super sugary foods with whats supposed to be a straight fiber diet.
  
  I have actually seen people feed their rabbits rose petals, are those good or ok for them? Probably in limited quantities huh.

  Kaytee brand is known for promoting “healthy” junk food. :/ They should be sued or something.
  
  ETA- I’m a little confused as I’m not sure how money plays into this, but I’m pretty sure oxbow is only a couple bucks if that more than kaytee

  The Petsmart I was at didnt have any Oxbow. Where I used to live did, I remember cause I used to give it to my guinea pigs. So I have to order it online which would mean shipping costs

  I once sent the hubby for timothy hay and he came back with one of these saying, ‘I bet they’ll love this!’ After I let the steam out of my ears I had to gently educate him. >_<
  That being said, there are a few times my bunnies will eat the Kaytee Orchard Grass, but they have tasted better, so they’re pickier about what they eat. I find the Kaytee can still make good nesting hay.

  Yes that hay is rather broad, does seem good for nesting, the hay my horse gets is much better… I just get so afraid of thinking of stealing pieces from my boarding barn that I just dont do it, plus too, I would much rather buy rabbit grade hay.

  oh and thanks for the student link!!! I was actually thinking of buying a bunny harness for the little girl and it was rather pricey but this would be really helpful!

  I really think this stuff is fine. Oxbow makes a Botanical Hay with dried herbs. My problem with KT is that it is pricey and not the best quality. It’s not horrible but there are better hay products out there.

  Well, I have a few favorites. I like American Pet Diner’s 2nd Cut Timothy and KMS’s 3rd cut hay. I think they both have good quality control.

  I am just kind of curious as you seem to know your bun’s diet Sarita, but what is your favorite pellet diet?

  I use Oxbow but I also like American Pet Diner’s. Either one of those are quality pellets. Oxbow is just easier to get. My rabbits are older and some don’t eat pellets at all but you definitely want to continue pellet’s with Tipsy at this age.

  I buy big bales of Oxbow or bales from my state’s chapter of the Rabbit House Society, one bale for 7 bucks!

  The herbs and stuff I don’t see a problem with, fruit in it though… I prefer to control my buns sugary food intake myself, rather than putting it in their hay.

  I bought Kaytee hay this last time because I got more bang for my buck, but the stuff is gross, the bunnies barely touch it. Its more..stick-like than oxbow timothy. I’m thinking about buying some from BB though, those minibales? The only thing is there are so many different ones, I’m like agh!

  I gave my bun a little straw of the timothy, she took a few bites and then had enough haha, but she does seem to like the orchard grass from Kaytee, again, it seems that the Petsmart here, all they carry is Kaytee, I am screwed when it comes to door to door shopping.
  
  Stickerbunny, thats what I was thinking! They had way too many cranberries and mangos in their packaging, at least I thought! So I am sure if I fed that to my bun, all she would do is pick out the tasty sugary stuff and forget about the hay!

  I have no idea how much of the “sweets” they put in the KT hay but the idea is right. It encourages foraging which is good exercise and mental stimulation for your rabbit.
  
  You could do the same with a handful of fresh hay and put your own treats mixed in with the hay.

  I buy Oxbow Botanical and my bunnies really like it. It’s mainly hay with just a sprinkling of dried herbs/flowers. Those small bags are pretty pricey, so they don’t get much of it. They mainly get Oxbow Timothy, plus Oxbow Orchard. I also like Zupreem Timothy, And I have ordered two or three different varieties of hay from Binky Bunny.
  
  I had tried Kaytee hay once years ago and didn’t like it much, and I should have known better, but about a year ago I bought a bag with the dried carrots because it was on special. I gave my bunnies some of it, but there were way too many carrot pieces and I didn’t like the consiistency. Some of them seemed too hard and some seemed rubbery. I ended up picking out most of the carrots and just giving them the hay. I will never buy Kaytee hay again.
