Hi everyone, I just wanted to update you on Maian, Stus little friend .
All our bunnies are in a large run, but Maian and Stu have been kept seperate for some time now since they became unwell.
Stu was on oral meds and injections daily for weeks, and Maian is our little rescue bunny who is completely blind, she was losing weight for awhile and developed a bad cough, but after a few weeks of noracillin she is now back to good health. Still completely blind though.
You may remember Maian, I think I have posted on here about her before. She came from a bunny miller and had been having a litter a month, and they were selling the babies locally. The woman she lived with came to us one day with Jellybeans, (Jerseygirl now has her) and we went to her place to see her rabbits and ended up taking them home with us. One had also been taken to a pet shop, and I went and got him as well. We were concerned with the health at the time because Jellybeans was partly blind, we knew his mum Maian was completely blind, and his brother has really shocking teeth that were close to growing through the roof of his mouth (his upper teeth actuallly do a 180 degree turn when they are not cut)
Maian was terrified when she first came to us. She couldnt see a thing, and for years she had been terrorized by these screaming kids who were quite rough with her, and she couldnt see them coming. For weeks she would tense up when she heard my voice, you could tell she was just waiting for rough hands to grab her from some direction.
So Maian and Stu-Bob developed an instant bond. THey would groom eachother for hours on end, and when Stu used to get upset with me poking her and cleaning her eyes etc, it was Maian who would comfort her with licks and kisses as Stu made a beeline for her when she was cross with me.
When it was feed time, Maian would follow Stu-Bob by touch to the food bowl to eat. Stu-Bob would always wait for her.
Every night when I would let Stu and Maian out for a run on our lawn, Maian would follow with her ears up, trying to find Stu-Bob by her sense of hearing, and then wouldnt leave her side.
When I am cleaning the rabbits and have the Vaccuum Cleaner running, Maian cant move because she cant her her way around. She just stops, rocks, and puts her ears forward to try and hear anything other than the Vaccuum. Stu used to run over to her and sit with her until the noise stopped and she was able to hear so she could walk towards familiar noises etc.
Now when Maian hears my voice, she puts her ears up to hear where I am coming from and sloooooooooowly edges her way towards the sound. Its such a joy watching her just “be” a rabbit, she has come such a long way.
At the moment you can tell she is somewhat fretting. Stu hasnt been around for 4 days now. Maian was ok while Stu was in the vets, but when I brought home Stus little body I let Maian have a sniff of her so that she had some closure. She just sniffed for one second and then turned and moved away.
Maian hasnt been eating much the last few days. Im not sure who would be a good bun to keep her company. Mr Bunny is almost 10 and would be a good match because he is elderly and not as boisterous, but I dont want to put him in a pen because he has been free range all his life. All our other bunnies are young and energetic, and Im just worried because no one can offer Maian support like Stu-Bob did. I dont want her to be alone for the rest of her life. Stu was like her seeing-eye bunny. Nobun else will offer that for her
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This whole story was very very sweet, she is such a beautiful bunny. I’m at a loss for solutions, maybe you could have Mr. Bunny come for visits?
Poor little Maian
Maybe try her with the others, see if somebunny takes after Stu, and bonds with her? Young and energetic may not be a bad thing necessarily, maybe one of them just needs a little Maian to look after ![]()
(((Mai))) It might take her some time.
I have a big soft spot for her.
((((Maian))))
She’s so beautiful.
I would put Mr. Bunny with her, it would be good for both of them. She’s a beauty.
UPDATE!!! Mr Bunny moved in with Maian last night.
He sat there and stomped at me (because I moved him). Maian went slowly over to him and he stomped again, so she started grooming his eyes. He loves being groomed, so they are best friends now.
Mr Bunny is about 10 now, and is starting to lose a little weight (I think the younger ones were beating him to his food etc) so its a good move for him.
He has been in with Sparrow who is a serial fur-plucker so he has a few bald spots. Now he will be able to grow his fur back in peace lol.
We were woken up throughout the night with loud stomps, but every time I checked on him, Maian was grooming him and they were stretched out together. I think this is a happy ending ![]()
Mr Bunny and Maian waiting for their breakfast this morning ![]()
Awww! How adorable and such a happy ending! I am so glad for you and everybun! And Maian certainly knows how to handle that grumpy old man!

Yay!
This s very heart warming…. awwww.
I am so glad to hear of this happy ending. They are so beautiful. Do you think maybe Maian thinks the new bunny might be Stu-bunny? I mean, rabbits have scent glands so I’m kinda doubting it, but I’d bet she senses the other rabbit’s warmth and associates it with Stu-bunny.
My Phenom recently lost her bonded mate, Beau. We did allow her to sniff him when we brought his body back from the vet. She has been very aggressive and territorial ever since but we’re also wondering if maybe it’s hormonal because she was beginning to act aggressive towards humans a couple of days prior to losing Beau. We’re hoping to have her spayed come January and then bond her with another bun we have here. He is just a baby right now though. ![]()
This is a wonderful resolution for Maian and Mr. Bunny. They may be more familiar with each other from before than was realized, just that our special Stu-Bob held the reigns in caring for her, so Mr. Bunny didn’t intrude. I think it’s great.
That’s great! It sounds like a great pair up – they sound sweet together.
Awhhhhhh they look so sweet and adorable together!
I’m very happy for them both! ![]()
