I checked both pet stores last night. No Oxbow Orchard. One of the clerks said the company didn’t send any Orchard with their order, only Timothy and there will be no more until the next cut.
This can’t be right!
My buns only eat the Orchard. I’ve always been able to get it year round. Bindi is not happy with the Timothy I bought and I’m worried about his hay intake because he’s shedding. Has anyone else had problems getting it?
It is a seasonal grass. And I think it’s around October when they stop shipping it. But I would email Oxbow to verify this…I don’t use orchard but I remember this being the case when I volunteered at a rabbit rescue.
Does anyone know how long orchard keeps? I might need to go stock up…
Mmm, I ordered a 50lb box of orchard at the start of this month from Oxbow. Perhaps go online and order it ?
Seems wrong…all hay grows in summer and yet we have it all year. So I don’t think this woudl be the case?
go oat,, your buns will love you for it.
That’s not right. I mean, yes it can happen if crops didn’t grow enough quality grass, but that usually happens with smaller farms. Yes hay is harvested and does not grow all year long, but the spring and summer harvests normally supply enough to last all year long. I have had no problem keeping Orchard mini bales in stock so far. But then again, this is the first year I am also carrying Oxbow Orchard so I might be in for a surprise – But we were able to restock last week with no problem.
Sam and Lady’s Human – As long as you keep hay in a breathable container, like a cardboard box, a plastic bin with holes, a cotton laundry bag you should be fine. Of course you have to keep it away from moisture — like a damp basement where mold can grow.
I know that at least in oregon and washignton the cool wet spring/early summer we had messed up crops bad. And the huge heat wave on the east side of the country wouldn’t have been good either. Could be there may be a shortage due to that.
I just looked up that it is a cool season grass and it’s production period is March through July and during September and October there is much less production of it. Which is probably why you aren’t able to get it right now.
Another thing as well is that some stores use distributors for their purchases rather than ordering directly from the company because it’s more cost effective for them so it’s possible the distribution center is out of the orchard grass as well or unable to purchase it right now.
I e-mailed Oxbow about it.
I can’t really order hay. I’ve looked into it before and the shipping cost is astronomical. The shipping would be like double or triple the price of the hay. Just can’t afford that.
Mike is there somewhere to buy Oat in a larger size than the 15oz?
Let us know what they say LPT.
I would give you some of mine, but if shipping costs from companies with a business discount is that high to Canada it would probably cost a lot to send
Hope you find a place that sells it, I know mine are picky about hay too.

I know your question was addressed to Mike, but because I have asked this question before to our disributor I know the answer as far as OXBOW goes. At this time, they do not have a larger size than the 15oz. I hope that changes in the future though as the popularity for Oat continues to grow.
And like Monkey said, crops this year have been rough. We won’t have ANY of the local Oat bales (the 40oz) until next year.
So we have the only the 15oz Oat from Oxbow.
I found some!!! I went to the store on the other side of town and found a big 25lb bag! I was so happy.
When I went to the other store that said they aren’t getting any more, I had them call this store and they said they didn’t have any. I decided to go check anyways on Friday. They must have found some in the back or got a new shipment. They were super busy so I didn’t have a chance to ask anyone about it.. This bag will last me about 3 weeks and then we’ll see.
There was a guy in line in front of me and he commented on the huge bag of hay I was buying “Are you feeding a horse?” I said “no, 3 little bunnies. They are too picky to eat the hay I feed my horse”.
Thank you BB!
This was the reply:
Hello Stephanie: Thank you for contacting Oxbow Animal Health, with your inquiry. This season’s first harvest has just arrived and we are packaging this season’s recent cutting of Orchard. However it does take some time to make it to the consumer, via the distributor, then retail outlet. Thank you for being an Oxbow customer and let me know how I can be of further assistance to you. Pam
I think then it was October when we used to get Orchard grass in stock. I couldn’t remember if it was October it ran out or October it was newly stocked. Well anyway I’m glad you found some.
