I’m eventually going on a trip that will require my rabbit  Baby being in a carrier for 3 or 4 hours.  How much bigger than my rabbit should the carrier be?  I plan to get a hard-sided one, but I don’t want one too big or too small.  I will have to carry it for at least a half hour, so don’t want one too big & heavy.  But I don’t  one in which Baby is uncomfortable, either.  Should she be able to turn around or not?

What breed of bunny do you have and how big is she?

I was hoping for general guidelines, so anyone could use the result, regardless of the size.  For example “[___ inches]/[___ %] longer & wider than the rabbit when she’s [sitting]/[lying down].”  If you could put it in those terms, great.  If not, assume a 5-pound rabbit.

I’ve never seen set guidelines like that. I would just get get a medium size carrier so the bun can fully stretch out and have room for hay.

I feel that I’m in a catch-22 situation:  if I had a carrier I’d know how big it should have been.  So I thought someone who already had a carrier could do the same.  As I said, I can’t get one that’s much too big.

Honestly, a carrier that would need to be large enough for a bunny to be comfortable for 3-4 hours isn’t one that is going to be easily lugged around.
Bunnies rely on stability and routine, they aren’t really a travel pet. Road trips are stressful, and air trips can be really difficult on a bunny as well.

Yes the bunny needs to be able to stretch out, turn around, and at least sit up. We can’t tell you what that is because there are bunnies of every shape and size, and even a large variance in size within a breed.

Well for reference this is the carrier I have: http://www.wag.com/dog/p/Petmate-Plush-Soft-Side-Kennel-Cab-110366 the size is large and I think it’s a pretty standard size for a cat carrier. My bunny is a lop weighing about 3 pounds. She can stretch out in it and turn around, it’s pretty big for her. I know you can’t buy too large of a carrier because you need to carry it around for some time but make sure your bunny can lay down comfortably.

I guess I’ll have to try to figure it out by myself, as no one so far has been of that much help to me.  I may have to try using various-sized cardboard boxes for walks around the block until I find the right size, then find a carrier of that size.  One of the 5 rabbit books I have says not to get a carrier too big or the rabbit will slosh around.

I’m sorry, it’s very hard sometimes to give advice over the web. I think your best bet is a large cat carrier, I put my other bunny Totoro in it just now to see how it would fit him (he’s a larger bun, 6 1/2 pounds) so I think that your bunny would be good in that size. To prevent them from sloshing around a towel on the bottom of the carrier makes them more comfortable and gives them traction. But really, it would be very difficult to get a carrier that would be comfortable for that length of time.

Agreed. Put a towel on the floor to keep them from sliding. A carrier MUST be big enough for them to move around, lay down, stretch, and have a place for hay as well.

Is there any way you could hire a pet sitter or ask a friend/neighbor to take care of your bunny while you’re gone if you can’t find a big enough carrier? Traveling really is hard on rabbits unfortunately.

You could always get one of those cloth carriers that has a shoulder strap

I think try go as big as you can where it’s still comfortable enough to carry. You can put something inside to give the rabbit traction or even fit a small dog bed inside. They should still be able to move about and stretch even with that in there.

If you’re travelling in a private car and are using a smaller carrier, then you can schedule some stops for exercise to compensate. If travelling by other transport (bus, airplane etc) you will likely need to find out from the company on their requirements. By air, you’re required to have air travel approved carriers and each airline dictates the carrier specs depending on the interiors of their planes. In the cabin, the carrier is to be placed under the seat.

I’m going to go ahead and lock this thread since “Cocoa” is no longer a member on this site.

Sometimes it seems we can suggest things and offer our best advice until we’re blue in the (figurative) face, but if it’s not what someone wants to hear, they will not listen, and as in this case, attack the respected members who tried to help.

So I will thank everyone for their great suggestions myself. You guys rock!
