  Hello everybody! Not sure if anyone’s going to be able to give me an answer, but I thought I would at least try So my cats and rabbits get a along pretty well, which means they spend quite a lot of time together, both supervised and unsupervised. My cats love to lay around with the buns so they jump the gate I have up lol But I ‘ve also noticed that the cats will drink from their water. Also, when the buns are having free roam, I’ve seen them drink from the cat fountain. I’ve gotten the cats to not use the rabbit’s litterbox because I wasn’t sure how healthy it would be, but how healthy is it for them to drink after one another? All the cats are indoor cats so I know they’re not bringing in strange stuff from outside, I just didn’t know if there were already types of bacteria that cats carried that could potentially be harmful to Thumper and Penelope? Thanks

  Drinking water is fine. You are totally correct about the litterboxes too.

  Ditto Sarita. I would add not to let them unsupervised. My cousin has a couple of cats and a bunny-would not listen when I said not to have them unsupervised-her cats were good, they got along great no problem yadayay. Her FB post yesterday was about her bunny having it’s eye scratched by her cat-big vet bill. So even if they are ALWAYS good-I wouldn’t let them interact unsupervised.

  No, I agree Kokaneeandkahlua, it worries me to have them unsupervised, because even though I’m sure none of the cats would hurt the buns on purpose, rabbits just don’t ‘play’ the same way as cats. I have a baby gate up and that kept them out for the most part when I wasn’t home. But they would sometimes jump the gate, so I’ve found that if I put a piece of cardboard over the gate, kind of like a tepee, it deters them from jumping it, or at least it seems to be at the moment.

  I can’t trust our cat — He’s never done anything to my bunnies, but my gut says he would play too rough as he likes to catch our pants with his paws, or if we drop spaghetti noodles on the kitchen floor, they are done for. Just anything that moves, he wants to bat around. We also have a gate and though he has never jumped over that to get to the bunny room, I still don’t trust it. I have a curtain that blocks the area visually (hangs on the other side of the gate away from him so he doesn’t feel the need to play with the curtain. The curtain is also secured with velcro. For whatever reason, that completely negates our cats interest in the bunny room. However, if I have to leave the house completely, then I do keep him separated by a by a door. Again, our cat has never done anything to show he would harm my bunnies, but I too have seen “playful” cat scratches cause eye damage and abscesses in bunnies before.

  Great stuff-I hope that keeps working! Cats are tricky-slinky and agile, big jumpers and can fit through small spaces! I wonder if the other cat owners have solutions that may help should you need them
