I swear I hate her some days. I came home from work to find the usual dug out liter box and hay thrown all over the place. And for an added bonus, she pulled the phone book out of the box I put it in, tore up what was left of it, flung the bits all over her cage, and the surrounding floorspace. Then she turned the box on it’s side, ripped open the bottom of it, and made herself a little tunnel. She also somehow manages to sit on top of it without collapsing it. Not sure how she pulls that one off. I really should have taken a picture, but I was so angry I just got right to cleaning it all up. Little itty bitty bits of phonebook and cardboard box were everywhere. It was like some sort of rabbit pen, phone book snowglobe from hell. And this can’t be good for the vacuum.

On the plus side she absolutely loves her improvised tunnel and zooms through it like crazy.  So I left it in there. I will still pick her up another box to replace this one once she finishes it off.

Sounds like she found stuff she likes to do. Don’t get mad, adapt. She digs in her litter box, so put it inside a bigger cardboard box so the litter only goes into the outside box. She likes tearing and chewing cardboard and paper, thats not unusual. Invest 440 in a carpet sweeper, it will save wear and tear on your vacuum.

If it’s not covered in excrement, why don’t you just leave it?

ETA nm reading fail. That is frustrating.

Eddie used to dig his litter out too. I really don’t know what got him to stop. I know I started letting him be free range and it seemed to die down then. I also turned his whole cage bottom into a litter box and that seemed to placate him. I also got Lolli about a year after I got him cause he was just driving me freaking nuts with all his behaviors. So it could be that he was lonely.

Sooo………have you considered getting her a friend? LOL

I don’t really have an advice. But….(((HUGS))) I know how frustrating it is to deal with a willfull, messy rabbit. Believe me.

MonkeyBun, I really liked the idea you proposed about getting a bigger box to put under the litter box. Just have not found one that fits yet since you first suggested it. Of the numerous cardboard boxes stashed away in my house, none fit. But I am going to my favorite store (Costco!) today and they have boxes galore there. So my goal is to find one that fits.

That is where I get my boxes for her “phone book box”. She loves to shred phone books. And we have plenty for her to destroy. But I put the phone book into the box to keep it from getting EVERYWHERE. The part that got me was that she pulled the book from the box, and flung it all over the place. A while back I bought sheets of plexiglass that I put on two sides of her cage to protect my walls and adjacent couch from her litter flinging. So I am doing my best to adapt to her. She just keeps finding new ways to make it difficult for me. I love the idea of the NIC grid condos, but part of me is reluctant to try because I could see her tearing that apart in no time.

A friend may help, and I would love to get another bunny. But right now we just do not have the time or money for another animal. We already have 5 cats, a dog, Momo, and my reptiles. Not to mention we are thinking on having kids in the next year or two, so things are just going to get more hectic.

I had a rabbit who was like this. She was relentless – she would be so focused on her project that was the only thing she would see. It was pretty fascinating – I haven’t had a project driven bunny since then.

I’m not sure what was going on inside her head really. She had a great personality and was very loving despite the destructive nature. I would have to wonder if you got another bunny if she would also teach that bunny the art of destruction….

Had a box idea for the phone book. She’ll probably do renovations, but get a box with a top and bottom, cut a little entrance into it, pop the phonebook in, get the box lid closed up. Make sure entrance is too small to pull phone book through, but big enough for bunny.

That is a really good idea. She might like to sleep in there too. She used to have a little basket when she was smaller that she loved to sleep in… until she ate it.

For the vacuum, you can get a shop vac for those huge messes to save your normal vacuum the wear and tear, they are able to handle it a lot better though aren’t really good for vacuuming a whole floor, her pen would be fine. And they are pretty cheap.

                          How old is she?

Riley was really destructive when he was younger. He has FINALLY slowed down now (at almost 5 years of age), but there were times where I thought I couldn’t handle it when he was younger. The worst was his love of ripping up carpet, which meant he had to be locked up in his cage a lot of the time (I was renting an apartment at the time, so I couldn’t change the flooring or anything). His neuter also helped, but it still took awhile to get him to calm down.

She just turned a year old, and has been fixed since April. Shop vac is a good idea. I also brought a hand held vac, or bunny vac as I call it when we first got her. It does a great job for the random poops and small messes, but her messes are getting bigger and bigger. She also likes to tear up carpet. I would love for her to be out more, but with the Holiday season upon us my work has been throwing on the hours. I have five cats so free range is out of the question. Most of the cats ignore her, and she can beat them up anyways, but they have all their claws, so I am not risking her around them unsupervised.

Monkeybun I finally utilized your bigger box under the litter box idea. She completely destroyed it in less then 1 day. First couple days she left it alone. Did not even kick out her litter either. Woke up this morning to kicked out litter and she had one side almost completely torn off. Maybe I should get a pic of her handy work?
