Our neighbor has a largeish dog with a VERY deep, loud voice. He moved in last week. He thinks the dog is an outside animal and apparently isn’t well enough behaved to live in doors (no training). She barks ALL the time – anytime a door opens, anywhere on the street. Anytime a car goes by. Anytime another dog barks. She starts at about 2am, ends at about 6am. Their yard is directly across from our bedroom window. He refuses to take her inside at night, since she’s untrained and won’t train her to end the barking.
Now, city ordinance is pretty useless. You need to enter court on your own expense, with TWO other neighbors backing you up in writing and willing to testify. We have two neighbors and he is one of them… so that is pretty much out. We’ve talked to him and he isn’t willing to train his dog, take it inside EVER, or otherwise help beyond he threw up a privacy fence which doesn’t help since she barks at any and all noises. Edit: And even if we could get enough people to testify (ha!), the court could order him to debark his dog or get rid of her is about all. One is cruel, the other would basically be her death warrant as shelters are over full and won’t take in dogs.
So, we’re moving our bedroom to the living room, since it’s the only room we can’t hear his dog bark in.
Effectively cutting our lovely, large, two bedroom house with a huge living room/dining room into a 2 room apartment.
Which means I have to move the bunnies out of their room, into the bird room. Big pain in the neck! And I was just starting to make progress in getting their litter habits back, now I am worried they’ll destroy the hardwood in the room we’re moving them to peeing on it. :s
And I feel really sorry for his dog with winter coming up, it’s going to be stuck outside in the snow and not allowed indoors. ![]()
People wonder why I prefer being around animals to humans.
That would be so annoying! My parents have new neighbors who got a young dog and do the same thing – they claim she’s an “outdoor” dog, but they just say that so they don’t have to train her to live inside or to stop barking outside. Apparently someone is now making threatening phone calls because the police showed up at my mom’s door to ask if she did it (the neighbor was mad that my mom brought it up politely, so then made the jump that my mom must be the type of person to make crazy threats). People get so defensive when they’re doing something so annoying!
I read the barking dog website and they say that 90% of owners of barking dogs have psychological issues of control and aggression, which makes sense
and yes it is VERY annoying. Boyfriend went to work today for a 12 hour factory shift on 2 hours of sleep because the dog wouldn’t shut up. And he only gets one day off a week. Luckily we don’t _own_ the house, it’s a rental, so moving is an option… which boyfriend started looking for new places last night since he wasn’t allowed to sleep. But, sheesh. I love dogs, I will be happy to have his dog bark all day long just not at night – I would even pet sit for him if he wanted, I miss having a doggy around since I can’t have one with the bird. We politely asked him to keep the dog quiet, even took organic home made doggy treats as a peace offering to show we aren’t dog haters – but no winning with some people.
I think we’re going to end up moving soon, the rent we pay here was a great deal for what we got – super quiet home, large enough for our family, allows pets and has a yard. But, now the yard is no longer useable for the bird because the dog barks anytime we walk outside and won’t stop until we go in, which freaks out my parrot so he can’t have yard time (which means I have to buy a UV lamp for him). No way could I take the buns out for a run, which I had planned to make a safe outdoor area next summer. And we lost both our bedrooms because the dog is CLEARLY heard in both all night long. They are going to be turned into animal rooms for the time being. Stickers has been more on edge too, she’s scared of everything and I am sure the dog barking all night isn’t helping her skittish nerves. ![]()
I live on the top floor of an apartment complex. I used to have people living on the 2nd floor apartment. The people had 2 dogs, one small dog, one big dog. I believe that the people worked at night, because that is when the dogs would bark bark bark bark like NUTS. EVERYTIME a person walked up the stairs, or came near the apartment complex, BARK BARK BARK BARK, YIP YIP YIP YIP. It really made me so angry!!
I called the apartment security, but everytime they came by, nobody answered their door. That is how I came to the conclusion that the residents must work at night, or just not be a home.
The barking would be at anytime of day, but mostly at night from midnight until whenever.
Eventually, the people got evicted ![]()
Every now and then, I will see the former neighbors at my work ![]()
Oh don’t even get me started on people who neglect their dogs. Idiots who should not own an animal in the first place. And training a dog is so dang easy. Mine picked up on it so well he started training himself. Literally he did. One night he was in bed with us and I told him. “Ok Zeke, time to go to bed.” and I was about to get up and point him to his dog bed. We had only had him for maybe a month, and he got up and laid down in his bed without me needing to lead him to it. And to this day he knows that “go to bed” means to go to his dog bed. He is such a good dog. <3
Had a neighbor like that. They had gotten a puppy and bark bark bark all nite. One nite having had enuf I went outside and shouted over the privacy fence to shut that d@m dog up. Every nite and we can’t get anysleep around here.
They let the dog inside the house at that point and no more bark bark bark at nite.
We moved and the neighbors to our left had 2 little dogs. bark bark bark and when I let mine out a catahoula and a white boxer mine would start barking too.
I would fuss at mine then finally I started fussing at the neighbors dogs and took the waterhose and squirted them with water. The owners got the hint. And mine were quiet after that.
Have you tried contacting your landlord? Maybe they would be willing to take the guy to court if they see that it is going to make them lose good tenants.
I know that debarking or rehoming the dog might seem cruel, but the dog is obviously unhappy here. And if the owner isn’t willing to work with the dog at all, perhaps the chance at a new home would be better than a life of stress in the backyard. It is a sad cruel fact that there are WAY too many bad dog owners out there! And other pets too for that matter.
I dont know about dogs but I cant put my buns outside in thier outside hutch right now because the neighbors cat keep trying to stalk them. When I told my neighbor they told me too bad thier cat was here first and are being totally unreasonable. I threatened them to call the pound if they dont control it a little or at least try. I am thinking of sitting out there with them and squirting that darn cat with water every time it comes near.
bullrider – I would just keep the buns in the house
They belong there, and will take over anyways ![]()
Lol thats for sure Mr. Hopper just flops where ever. They have free run of the living room where we are at most of the time.
Molzy, haven’t tried the landlord… but I don’t think there is much he can do. Without written testimony of two neighbors, the law states there is no evidence, even if we could recorded it, it wouldn’t count. Even if police came and witnessed it, it wouldn’t count. Which is dumb, but that is laws for ya.
For now we’ve moved into the living room, which is a temporary solution til we can find something better. lol
Water would probably teach the cat to leave them alone, or you could try something smelly that cats can’t stand to make a perimeter around your buns area. As long as you’re there to supervise.
There should still be a 10pm sound ordinance the dog and owner is breaking, especially because its a consistent issue. Have you tried calling the police when the dog is barking at 2AM?
Another thing you could try – I think there are some ultrasonic things you can purchase that make a noise that bothers dogs when they bark? I’ve never tried one, but it might be worth a shot. It’s hard, because I think that sometimes dogs deserve to bark (like when someone comes to the door or something), but they also need to have limits when it comes to every noise around!
I am amazed that your area doesn’t have some type of nuisance law or noise law about the middle of the night. Does the dog have proper water and shelter – maybe you could get the guy for that? Poor dog, it sounds like he is bored out of his mind and needs some stimulation.
Good luck!
If the guy is renting you could contact and complain to his landlord. You could also try calling the non emergency police or animal control and launching noise/animal treatment complaints.
Good luck! My next door neighbors have a house alarm and if the power flickers at all it goes off like crazy. They’re barely ever home in the summer so I always have to call non emergency police and report the alarm. They get it turned off somehow.
Gosh I Know in Broward county florida if the alarm goes off more than 3x and there is no emergency or breakin you get fined
like if someone tries to get into a window the alarm will go off and the theif will run so how do you know it wasn’t a true attempt to break in.
They do have a noise ordinance – if you and two neighbors come together to bring a WRITTEN complaint to the court, you can get something done, if the judge orders it, there is no actual _law_ about what noise and when, it’s completely up to the judge. That is the only ordinance. The police get annoyed and tell you to stop bothering them if you call them about noise. And he’s not renting. When we lived in an apartment, it was HARD to get the people beside us in trouble even with there being a landlord, they played music at 3am and other hours all through the night, but without the rest of the apartment complex to back us up, the landlord could do nothing to stop them legally. We recorded it on voicemail for the landlord, we had the maintenance guy come over, the landlord came over, but without the neighbors to join in… all they could tell us to do was turn the TV on in our apartment to drown it out (which would not help, since we were trying to sleep
). The city doesn’t care much about noise pollution. We moved from the apartment mainly because of that, though they did get evicted eventually, it was because they stopped paying rent.
The dog is cared for, except for leaving her outside all the time. Which isn’t illegal, unfortunately – though I wish it was, the poor thing is going to be freezing when snow hits.
All she needs is more attention and a little training to know that every door opening isn’t a threat she needs to bark about. And the sonic things don’t go through privacy fences – so the neighbor would have to hang it, which he doesn’t want to stop his dog barking, so don’t see that happening. I already looked into that. lol
For now we’re living in the living room, we turned our bedroom into the bird room and the birds room into the bunny room. There are some houses available in town for sale that are waaaaaaaaay away from the nearest neighbor we’re thinking about, that way it doesn’t matter if the neighbor is annoying, they’re too far away to care about.
You have my sympathy. I know what you’re going through. We had to sell our house because of neighbor problems. The entire neighborhood had dogs, and none of the dogs were taught not to bark constantly, or to stay on their own property, etc. It was a daily chore cleaning up feces, and my DH does much of his work from home, preparing lesson plans and grading papers, etc., so the constant barking was disruptive even during the day. It didn’t help that our windows were ancient, so there was no escape. The neighbors played music loudly at all hours, too! There was a noise ordinance but it was not enforced, and the police got annoyed when we’d call about it.
I’m so glad to be out of there. Good luck to you. Hopefully you’ll find a wonderful, peaceful place to live in the very near future. ![]()
