This is a post for anyone who has a Flemmie or is concidering one. I adore my Abby. When she streches out she is 36″ from the tip of her nose to the end of her toes. She is about 11lbs now. Not huge for a Flemish Giant. She is completely free range and has full run of all 3 floors of our house.
She eats A LOT. We will go through anywhere bewteen 3 & 4 40lbs bales of hay a year. She loves her Timothy hay. For veggies she eats 3-4 big romaine hearts and 2 big bunches of parsely and cilantro every week. She also gets a HEAPING 1/4 cup of pellets twice a day. When we went down to 1/4 cup twice a day she was losing too much weight.
For bedding we use wood pellets that I get from a local stove store that makes them specifically for animals. We go through 1 40lbs bag every month.
We have 2 litterboxes for her. One is an old cage base that was given to us when we adopted her and the other is an under the bed storage tote. Both are about 20″x32″.
Her hay racks I made myself with wire stacking shelves and nic grids.
Her carrier is an Intermediate sized dog carrier which is 28″Lx21″wX22H. When she streches out in it her head usually hangs out on the floor.
She’s not a big player. She likes to be lazy, lay around and snuggle. She does like to zoom around the floor which requires a very large open area. We buy concrete forms from Menards as tunnels. I also like to get big boxes for free at Sam’s Club when we check out. They won’t hold up to her jumping on them but she does like to lay in them. She does have one big box from my exercise bike that has hole cut in it which she loves to run through. She has a digging box but rarely uses it. She also like willow or grape vine wreaths. She’s not much of a chewer or digger.
Bunnyproofing is NOT easy. Thankfully she can’t get under the couches. NIC grids have been a lifesaver! One bite from her will sever a laptop cord in two. I try to make sure any cord are behind furniture of behind NIC grids. If I need to keep her out of a room it requires 2 baby gates stack on top of each other. She jumps 1 with ease. My bed is 30″ to the top of my mattress and she jumps up there all the time. Especially to wake me for breakfast if I have over slept.
That’s all I can think of at the moment. Please ask if you have any questions. I’m more than happy to answer and help. =)
