Hey guys,
This is a little embarassing, but I really do need some good input from fellow bunny parents. I live in a college rental house. I have the third floor of the house and my two rabbits have free range on that floor. I’ve been in my house for about 4 months and soon after moving in we discovered the mouse problem. Since becoming aware of it, we have been very careful about not leaving food out and we have been “mouse free” up until about a week ago. I say “mouse free” in quotations, because I think mice generally stick around, even if you don’t see the evidence.
Well the mice are back, I suspect due to recent colder weather. We have seen one running around. The big issue with my house is that the basement is dark, scary, and dungeon-like, and then we have baseboard heaters throughout the house. I know for a fact that this is how the mice are getting around, I’ve seen them come from the heaters.
Until an hour ago, I thought the mice were only on the 1st floor. Well, that was until I tried to turn on my air conditioner and sparks flew. Sure enough there were mouse chew marks on the cord and exposed wire. So crap, now these things are near my bunnies, their food, and my BED. I think I’ve about had it with the live traps (they have been pretty unsuccessful). So, I need some advice on an effective way to get rid of this problem. Don’t get me wrong, I’d prefer not to kill them. But, honestly, I really need them gone.
So the manual snap-traps are certainly out, because I will NOT risk that anywhere near bunnies. And poison is not an option because I don’t believe in it and it’s also so dangerous for other animals. What about a repellent? Chemical or audio? I wonder if the buns would be sensitive to the sound, probably…
Any advice or suggestions would be sooooo appreciated. I should also mention that I do NOT bring food upstairs, EXCEPT for bunny hay, pellets, and veggies.
THANK YOU!
