I was thinking of taking a large clear plastic rubbermaid storage box and putting a hole on each end and use a cut off piece of the cement cardboard rolls they have at a hardware store to wedge in the holes to keep them from chewing on the plastic hole, but still leave access to go in and out of the box- fill it  half-ways with dirt and shreds of paper without ink as a dig box and use an icepick to make holes in the lid to hang a bell from one, and different bunny safe hanging toys from the other holes i made. It would be easy to clean out and replace the dirt and cardboard pieces. What kind of string or wire and dirt should i use? Also what do you think of the dig box and do you have any other suggestions?

It sounds like a good idea to me! Although I know I wouldn’t use dirt, I can see that easily becoming very messy! I like the idea of putting the cardboard rolls in there! I’ve also thought of something like this, but couldn’t think of how to safely round off the edges so I’ve never done it.

What about that shredded cardboard packing material that looks like crinkled easter grass?

I thought of using the large cardboard tubing because i didn’t want them to injest the plastic, and it would provide a slight tunnel instead of the thin hard edges of the plastic to jump through. I love the shredded cardboard idea, and it would be less messy than the dirt. What kind of string should i use to hang up toys with?

Any time I need to tie something in Penelope and Thumper’s cage, I use cooking twine. It’s made from recycled paper and is biodegradable, so I feel like it’s safer to use than other stuff (I might be wrong though lol)

I’ll have to try it. Surely if it’s non-toxic and safe for the environment and bio-degradable it should be okay to use.

You can also use sisal string. It’s safe if a bunny nibbles on it.

I use organic gardening twine! I use it to hold their hay houses together when they start to fall apart as well. All I know is don’t use paper shredder paper! It’s so so messy and dusty. Maybe from a wide shredder but the fine ones are awful. How about crinkling a bunch of newspaper balls, or filling it with wood pellets? actually wood pellets sound great! Mine are about $6 for 50 pounds at home depot.

Hey in regards to the edges, the dig box I made of was a laundry basket. What I did was after cutting the holes, I used sandpaper to round and dull the edges. Seemed to work great.

As far as the paper material, I know you said inkless paper, this is a question I have had for a while, while perusing through the bunny info section I see alot of regular newspaper being used. Can someone explain to me why this is safe? It obviously is or the mods wouldnt have allowed those to be used as examples lol. Thanks(sorry for hijack, but could be useful to you as well :o)

@ zpipes: most newspapers and phonebooks are printed with a soy-based ink these days, so that’s considered safe. You can always check with specific printers in your area for your own piece of mind.  A rabbit eating a little paper is no biggy. You wouldn’t want them tucking into lots of it though obviously.

@ texastornado88: Great idea!  I especially like the idea of the tunnels into the digging area.   I simply added some long pieces of packing paper to a tunnel recently and it renewed interest in it for the rabbits. Especially for my almost 5 yr old bunboy funnily enough. So your dig box idea I think would be a hit at my place.

Would totally work We have used a high cat litter box, laundry baskets (The same way-with holes cut out for entrance) and cardboard boxes. The nice thing about cardboard is you don’t clean it you just toss it.

I put shredded news paper in a heavy duty cardboard box, liqueur stores had good one, veggie/fruit boxes from grocery stores are really strong.. If need be I start a small hole for my girls to get a hold of. When needed I just replace it with a new one. Furbee is the digger in the bunch and she gives it hell. Digging and throwing paper out, dragging it back in, pushing it around. I ball the shredded paper up in big balls and just throw them in. They chew a little but very little, there is so much hay and grass and toys around.

About cutting hole in plastic, I use a wood burning tool, it melts, rolls and seals, makes a nice safe hole.

Furbee digs ferociously outside she throws dirt 3 and 4′ behind her so I don’t use dirt, I worry about it bouncing off the sides and hitting her eyes.
