Hi everyone,
I’ve been gone for a while so I don’t know if you remember my buns Merry and Banner (my little mini rex boy). Banner is at the vet’s overnight tonight because he went into GI stasis (or was on the verge of it, I’m not sure at what point it is a bout of statis).
He’d been having trouble with abscesses on his feet, so I brought him in to have them looked at. I saw the back-up vet, not my normal vet who knows how much Banner hates to be held. They lanced a whole bunch of his toes but by the time they got to the abcess on the inside of his foot he had had WAY too much, so instead of stressing him more, they did what they could, gave him some Baytril and Metacam and sent us on our merry way.
He was doing well but at the 10 day mark I noticed his inside foot was bad again, so I brought him back in to have it lanced (successfully) this time, and he got a shot of penicillin. That was Wednesday. I’m babbling right now I think because this has been an emotional day. At any rate, I noticed that he wasn’t eating as much as normal (although he was still running happily for his fruit and papaya pills), and this morning I didn’t see any poop, and his ears were so cold.
I called the vet and she had me bring him in (thankfully to my normal vet). He had lost .3# since Wednesday!
It looks like I got him there just in time, poor boy. (and got reprimanded at work for taking the day off but that’s another story). The vet suspects that the stress of the lancing, combined with pain (did I mention he refuses metacam? He HATES it) and the extra antibiotics probably caused it.
They kept him, gave him subcutaneous fluids, a pain shot, and some motility medicine. I just called and they said he’s eating really well (yay) and as feisty as ever.
He hasn’t used the litter box yet though – but if he does, I get to pick him up tomorrow! yay!
Poor little Merry is mad at me because she’s alone. Hopefully this won’t stress HER out.
At any rate, my first time dealing with this. Oh, and the abcesses – they think he’s either allergic to his litter or perhaps to the wool carpet or something. I’ve switched to only Carefresh so we’ll see if that makes a difference once he’s healed up.
