        hi everyone :3

my bunny fufsy is always making a huuuge mess with her hay. is always strung out everywhere on her cage floor, and she isnt potty trained yet, so sometimes she will pee on it (even though most of the time, she does seem to be peeing in one specific spot). also, the hay will get stuck in her long fur, bc shes a lionhead. I was just wondering if this box-type-thing i found would be suitable to put her hay in and stick it in the corner of her cage? im mostly worried about if its safe to chew on? i don’t want her to eat all the cardboard and get sick :c

but the box is two boxes in one, so its pretty thick and sturdy. not flemsy, thin cardboard. what do you guys think?

I think if she isn’t potty trained you’ll want ot put her hay in her litter box. That way she’ll eat and go in the litter box, and not in that cute little box.

i would do that so she will become potty trained, but we dont have a litter box for her right now. all the ones we saw were too big, so we plan on buying her a larger home so the potty will fit and she will have room to run around at night.

I would get her a small cat litter pan, they are about 5 bucks from Target, Walmart or a pet shop, right away. She will easily litter train herself now, but if you wait she may have trouble down the road because she learned bad habits. You will need a second, larger box for her larger cage, but a spare litter pan is good to have. Some bunnies run around and want to use it in another room so they don’t have to go back to their cage, so it’s good for her to know she must always use a litter pan. So unless you’re buying the cage today, I’d get that first.

I only worry about the color of that box for the hay, since it’s a food thing. A deep color means a lot of dye was used, and often the ink could be toxic. I actually would not risk it, but go with more approved hay bins. A simple peeled willow basket (you can find those at Joann Fabric for example) can also be an option if you don’t like what is sold in your pet stores or here in the BB store. Just the color on your lovely box makes me nervous for the long term. Even a plain cardboard mailing box is probably safer. I’d go with hay in a litter pan for an immediate solution today.

i also was worried about the colour of the box too. i saw her nibble on it, so i took it out asap. could i buy her these willow baskets to play in also? and theyre safe to chew on? i will try the cat box idea too. (: thank you!

Cat boxes are great. The bigger the better in fact, lol. I have a 4 lb dwarf that LOVES her large cat box (w/o the top of course). there is always a bunch of hay inside. Rabbits likes pooing and eating (a talent that I find quite amusing) so it is natural to them.

I would use a cardboard shoe box or something. I use that for hay, or a willow basket. I would smelll the basket, as some have chemicals in it. It also doubles as a toy as well lol.

As a rabbit owner, you will have to get used to messes.. rabbits are indeed very clean creatures, but make a lot of hay messes hahah

lol, i can already tell. fufsy is soo spoiled, whenever you go to feed her, she jerks the veggies out of your hand like “hey give me that now!” and im like you dont have to be so rude, missy haha

Heh! They do enjoy routine. There is another member on here whose rabbit knocks stuff over when she isn’t home or doesn’t feed him pellets on time. It is quite amusing. I get wake up calls from Chacha every morning. She is either chewing on something, or jumps on my bed to get my attention. After she is fed, she is content and quiet lol.

This was all I could find, but it’s seagrass and you can use it like this as a diggy box or turn it upside down and just widen the handle hole on one side for bunny to climb through.

Maybe a blanket or a towel. Make sure she doesn’t ingest it first. My rabbit loves digging in my clothes..

haha, mine loves to do that with my clothes too :b sometimes she tries to nibble on the towel, but she could just be chewing, not eating it. speaking of rabbits chewing on things, fufsy won’t use any of the chew toys i buy her. i bought her these pinecone ones and she used them for a while, but not much. so then i tried pieces of chew bark i bought and she never used them. now im using timothy cubes, she doesnt even touch them D: idk what to do. any suggestions?

this thread actually caught my eye because recently I purchased a litte plastic bin for the hay…I used to just put it right in the little box like everyone has said…but with the 2 brats it was inevitable the hay would end up covering the litter box and covered in pee so I went and got this bin thinking in was genius….of course I was outsmarted sophie figured out first that she could fit in it, so I fixed this by keeping it on an angle supported by a paper towel roll…well little missy figured out she could tip it over, then she realized hey why dont I knock it out of my little box and make a mess   they always get their way

Chacha I feel like the bratty bunny making a mess you described could be cady…

haha! that sounds kinda like what i’m going through! i was putting her hay in this ceramic carrot and this is what happened:

                                        Photobucket

she is too big to fit in it now, but i cant use it as a hay holder anymore because i need it to put her food bowls in. when they’re flat on the ground, she thinks its sooo funny to knock them over and waste food u____u lol.

long story short, tried the box i discussed in this thread. she tried to eat the box instead of the hay. tisk tisk. thennnn i bought another ceramic bowl that was quite large. shaped like a big piece of lettuce haha. I put her hay in that, and so far, it seems to be working except sometimes her bedding gets in the bowl. im constantly picking it out. not to mention, the other day, i saw her sitting in the bowl D: so now im like, ohhh greaaat, im going to have to turn that into a potty now >.< (she would knock her other plastic potty over)

i just want to find a decent hay rack that attaches to the cage and despenses enough hay for her to eat without making a huuuge mess. im just so scared to spend more money on something that doesn’t work lol

LOL @ bunny in the carrot dish. I own that dish, and have the lettuce head one too, and Sammy eats her greens out of the lettuce bowl. The carrot dish was just too deep for her pellets so I retired it.

I think if you invest in a hay rack initially, it’s worth it. I would check out whoever you buy it from to see if it’s returnable, which may save you in a failed experiement.

I got this one from the BB store.

I used those plastic ties you just slide through (pkg. of 100 at Walmart) to attach it to the side. She has since chewed it off the bars, but still likes it for her hay. She has also eaten more of it (you can see where she started to by her right ear) and it’s about 2″ deep now. Time for a new one I think!
