I sure hope they took the bun outside with them when they fled the house – I tried 6 other news sources and all had the exact same writing, no report on if they tried to save bun or not.

I can’t imagine NOT grabbing your bun if it was right there on your chest…but who knows, it may have spooked and run to hide? The owner may have been too confused by the emergency to think clearly enough to grab the bun?
What is distressing is people who think a rabbit will act like any other animal in a house fire and run out. it won’t. It will most likely freeze. Not all dogs or cats run out either.

This is my worst nightmare; I have the three buns, the three cats and my Yorkie to get out of the house in a fire emergency, not to mention the human members of the family. I think even with each of us carrying a couple furbabies it is going to be a skin of the teeth operation to get us all out safely.

We also live in an area that doesn’t have fire service. Once the house goes up, it’s a goner. >.<

Unless they lay all of the firemen off. Recently in a Detroit a little girl died in a house fire due to budget cuts shorting the Detroit Fire Department.

Wow, never heard of a place without fire service and I have always lived in the sticks. 😮 Couldn’t imagine that, guess home owners insurance is a good thing to have.

I can’t believe they did leave the poor bunny behind – he fought his instincts to hide when scared, woke his owner and she LEFT him? Grab the bun off your chest, go to your daughters room, wake her up and everyone get out. Sheesh.

My mom always says that she prays we won’t have a fire or disaster, mostly for Huck’s sake, because she knows how much it would kill me to lose my kiddo.

Ditto that. I’m super paranoid. I never leave anything on when I go out, like the washer or lights because I’m just so scared. You never know. I very diligently check our smoke alarms as well. We actually live quite near a fire station but I would probably end up getting all the furbabies out before even calling 911.

I am shocked and really upset that the bunny wasn’t taken also. I would grab Chacha even though I know she HATES IT.

My carrier is out in the living room and they’re always locked into smaller areas when I am asleep/not at home so would be pretty easy to grab and… they are so used to me picking them up moving them, Powder tolerates it and just hunkers down like “fine, ok, get it over with” though Stickers would be a bit harder to catch, but when she’s scared she usually comes to me to save her. They both love to go in the carrier so that isn’t an issue either. And the bird is always in a cage when I am not around, so I could just take his cage outside. I wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without my babies if something happened. Only thing I would be worried about is if I wasn’t home and a stranger tried to save them, they hate strangers and always run from them.

My guess would be that they tried to save the bun, but it died later of smoke inhalation. Or it’s possible that it ran to hide and they couldn’t grab it.

Sadly I think most folks in our particular area would most likely pull up a lawn chair, crack a beer and pull out the marshmallows while a house burned. It is nigh impossible to organize anyone to do anything constructive here.

No insurance agency will do fire insurance in our area. The state will send out fire jumpers when the National Forest burns right down the road, but our burgh would have to be ‘incorporated’ (read taxed to death) to get even a volunteer station placed here. No one in our town is willing to vote that in.

That makes me sad and angry.

When hurricane Irene hit here, and we were worried about the river across the street flooding if the dam didn’t hold (it did flood, but not on our bend of the river) I put Porky in his little travel cage for the night. Porky spent the night at the foot of my sons bed, so that if we had to get out fast, we could just grab him and go.

I knew that if he was loose in his condo and the water started rising fast, he’d be panicking and impossible to shove into his carrying case quickly. It is really hard to grab a panicked rabbit quickly, they tend to run and hide.
