  I have been offered 4 rabbits a chinchilla and a guinea pig since we got the bunnies.
  
  I love the bunnies, I honestly would not mind a mixed species army of rodents. IF I WERE RICH.
  
  But really waht the heck makes you think that if you can not care for your one individual pet that I (who has 3 cats, 2 dogs, 2 rabbits, 1 fish and 2 human children) want to take on the responsibility of it, or the cost?
  
  “Oh you have 2 rabbits – want another. hahaha” Actually it’s not funny that your rabbit lives in a tiny hutch outside and get no attention. It’s gosh darn sad. But I can’t make it my problem right now!!
  
  “That cage is amazing want to add a Chinchilla to it? You can have it for free.” Oh because I was just about to beg you to pay to take care of and vet your unwanted pet.
  
  “all those veggies are for a rabbit!! I’ve never heard of anything so silly. Want my daughters guinea pig, it smells up her room and squeaks all the time.”
  
  I am so sick of people thinking that I should just take their rabbits. Because I am capable of reading a book, joining a house rabbit forum and bringing them to the vet doesn’t mean you are NOT. It just means you are stupid andtoo lazy to try. It means I want to learn and do well and you couldn’t care less.
  
  Sorry rant over. I would take all of them if I could. It just ticks me off so much how none of these people have ANY emotional attachment to animals they’ve had for years. They are jsut ready to hand them off to me some random girl on the street or posting a picture on facebook or talking to my kids at school. So sad.

  I’m sorry, I would be annoyed too. I will mention that you need to be careful with chinchillas and rabbits (that is, if you ever decided to take someone up on their offer). I guess rabbits can pass bacteria, which is harmless to them, to chinchillas and it is harmful to the chinchillas.

  I imagine it’s not just the pets that are problems for these people, they probably live a chaotic life and have problems with everything which is annoying too. Even giving you their pet wouldn’t solve their problem – they’d have another problem after that – some people just live in chaos.

  They probably think they don’t cost much because they don’t care for them properly. People are weird. And once you took their pets, they’d rush out and buy their kids another one, or buy themselves another one, then just have to rehome that too. *sigh* I sometimes will take an offered animal and rehome it, just because I feel so bad for it living in such horrid conditions.

  I’ve been in that situation too and it breaks my heart. I feel bad for the poor bunnies, but as my husband says, you can’t save all the rabbits.

  Ugh, isn’t it ridiculous? Sometimes all you can do is rant. I had a lady accost me once at the pet store because I was in the bunny section. She asked if I had a rabbit (duh, I’m in the bunny section). When I said yes she asked if I wanted another one. Come to find out, she had 15 in her garage! Her story was they had a female and then her husband brought home a male… What!?! Why would you think that was alright? What did you think would happen? I felt bad because she was clearly desperate, but after all, it was there own negligence.
  
  I have to detach myself from all the needy bunnies or I just go insane

  It’s why we love bunnies so much. They don’t talk. so they never say dumb things – just look wise and soulful. (And cute when they are being evil.)
  
  The mean response: You – “Why yes! I’d love to take your….(fill in with offer.)” when they light up or say “Really????!!!!” You, “No, just kidding! Hahaha.”
  
  Advocate response: You – “No thank you, but here is the address/website/phone number (pick one) of our local animal shelter where you can find a much better home for your pet.”
  
  Rabbit response: Walk away silently, turning back, with bunny butt prominent. Human imitates this behavior with stunning effect.

  ^^ THAT is right on the money. Those are the people who get pets, all the time and get rid of them when they grow up. And she’s sooo right that it extends to all aspects of their lives. Pity the pets they bring home.

  This doesn’t really happen to me with rabbits (yet) but I have people ask me to take in cats ALL THE TIME! I currently have 5 (four of them rescues) and have no space for more (they are all indoor). In fact, in the past week, there have been 2 times where people have tried to get me to take their cat! One of them having 15! O.o

  Ahh I tend to be a rabbit responder! lol. I volunteered with dog rescue for years – it became less as I had kids and adopted many of my own pets, but I’ve always been in touch with trusted rescuers and stayed loosely in the community. And I’ve had people ask – okay even beg me to take their dogs – but that happened maybe a handful of times over the course of 10 years. In 4 months so many people want me to take their bunnies. It’s jsut depressing. It saddens me to no end to know that they are leading crappy lives, and that I can help them.
  
  When I did dog rescue I eventaully went breed specific(Shiba Inu) because I knew I couldn’t save them all but if there was a Shiba Inu in my area and I had limited myself to saving those then I could find a way to help. Be it transport, fostering, adopting, doing homechecks etc.

  I can relate. Being a horse girl, I’m around at a lot of barns and many of them have rabbits…once people find out I’m a rabbit owner I get offered the bunnies because no one has the time to take care of them. I feel so bad because I want to help the bunnies and give them a better life but with 3 rabbits already as well as 3 cats and a horse I can’t take on anymore. Time wise or financially. I already feel guilty about the fact that I have 3 bunnies and some days I don’t feel they get enough 1 on 1 time with me.
  
  I think some people offer rabbits not understanding about the bonding process. They figure you can just toss a couple of bunnies in with your existing bunnies and they will all live happily ever after.
