Okay, my temporary babies. I am helping the rescue rehab some itty bitty squirrels. They are so fun to feed, watch and snuggle. Aren’t they cute?!

They’re adorable! The one on the left looks like he has a full belly. lol I don’t blame you for snuggling them – and my guess is they love it!

After your rehab with them is up, will they be re-released to the wild?

Yes and no. When they are weaned they will be “wintered”. They are too young to be released this late in the year, they would never learn how to forage for the winter to survive. So, they will stay in a large cage, at the rescue, and be released back into the wild in the spring.

Ha ha, don’t become TOO attached or you’ll be up there in the tree with them when they are released! You are one lucky duck, though – I envy you being able to take care of them. If they don’t seem to mind it too much, take a photo journal! lol And snuggle one for me! lol

Hahaha! Oh the image of me in the tree! I am afraid of heights, so it better be a short tree It is pretty neat taking care of them, watching them grow, play. They go crazy when I put apple, avocado and pecans in there with them. I need to take more pics of them in action, good idea. I did have one pass away She had very bad malocclusion and had a hard time sucking. She then aspirated and got pneumonia. It was pitiful watching her suffer while we administered antibiotics to give her a fighting chance. Yes, I admit, I cried. Thank God she is not longer suffering. But these 3 now? Wow, fiesty! It is a pretty neat journey and a good lesson for my kiddos!

It is interesting that squirrels like avacado. I know, I’ve seen avacado on the Poisonous to Bunnies lists. You would think their metabolism wouldn’t be that different, wouldn’t you? I’m sorry the one little one passed away, but I’m glad the 3 feisty ones are healthy and coming along with flying colors!

I know the guinea pigs can have a *taste* of avocado (but only a taste as it is fattening for them), so I guess is it different for each little critter. Avocado is good for the older ones who are weaning and learning to eat solids. You can give them grapes as well, but one of my little ones sucked a piece of the quarter grape in, instead of nibbling on it. I had to have hubs help me get the grape out of her tiny mouth, as it was stuck (thankfully not in her windpipe). Crazy squirrel!!

Ha, ha, you’ll have to keep a journal journal as well – of all these little adventures with your ittie-bittie squirrels! Not that you’ll want to remember all of them! Best of luck while you have them – snuggle-on!

Aww, I love squirrels. My mother had one as a pet when she was a kid – glad they are going to be released when they are old enough though. And yes MORE PICTURES !

I love squirrels! That must be so fun to take in baby squirrels. I hope their release into the wild goes well next spring.

I am not sure what happened to this momma. The rescue I got my buns from is also a wildlife rehab-er. She gets A LOT of wildlife. Seriously, you never know what you will see when you go up there. She has about 20 squirrels right now, all different ages. A lot of times, the nest gets knocked out of the tree (or blown out) someone comes along and finds them and then calls the rescue. When hurricane Katrina hit LA she got inundated with babies.
