Hi I was wondering if you put your bunnies cage on the floor or up higher.  i heard they prefer to be on floor they feel safer but all the hutches outside are high off the ground.  I was thinking of putting mine on a table so she could see around more.  What are your thoughts?

On the floor is best, so when it’s play time you can just open it up and let her out to play.

That said, I would not use a store bought cage. Use an x-pen instead, as most cages are FAR too small.

It does depend on the bunny too, some like to be able to see everything that’s going on. But if it’s young, a quieter spot might be best. Do you have other pets or very young children?

Is it you heard they like cages to be on the floor or that the rabbits themselves prefer to be on the floor rather then being held?

Outdoor hutches are built off the ground to help protect the rabbit from predators. This isn’t an issue inside the house (hopefully!) so it’s not necessary to have the cage off the floor. You can build a condo if you wanted to give your bunny the option of having a second or third level to jump to and hang out on, BUT still have a first floor door for easy access during exercise time.

The main problem with having a cage off the floor is that the rabbit would have to be lifted in and out for exercise time, and wouldn’t be able to return to his/her cage on their own (if they need to use the litterbox or wants to eat/drink something).  Lifting can be very stressful for the bunny and this might prevent them from wanting to have exercise time.

Oh the floor. Rabbits, even young, need at least a 4X4 space to roam/stretch at all times. That’s why xpens are so highly recommended here, because it gives your bunny the minimum amount of room she needs.
