Was this a mutation or a breed that they are developing? My in-laws have goats without ears, but I’ve never seen a rabbit without ears. He is cute though.

Agreed with Monkeybun…this is pretty interesting, but not necessarily the effect of radiation – that part just sounds like the media fearmongering.  I’ve heard of bunnies born without ears before, but they’re usually massively developmentally defective in some way – it would take some absurd mutation for a rabbit to develop completely normally aside from not having ears. I would guess it’s maybe the cause of some kind of physical trauma after birth rather than birth defect.

Bunnies minus ears have been recorded in the past, so let’s not blame the radiation. I live in Japan, and it really isn’t that bad. Just an unlucky place for it to be born!

I wonder if it has a home….maybe he wants to come and live with me!

I remember seeing a video with this little guy and all the adult rabbits in the group look very similar to one another. I think it’s more likely to do with a congenital defect then radiation. I’m not saying that radiation won’t cause such a thing though. I wouldn’t be overly surprised if down the track we see some effects of Fukishima in both humans and animals. Just with this rabbit, I do think other factors come into it. There have been other rabbits born this way and radiation had nothing to do with it.

He’s still super cute sans ears.

He’s sweet, but he will need a good safe home because they depend so much on their extra sharp hearing to be safe. I assume he is deaf, or does he have ear holes without extensions?

usually rabbits without ears occur because the mom actually chews them off. when I was picking out my rabbit there was one that was a cutie that was missing an ear and that’s precisely what happened. Usually its because the mom gets stressed out :C kinda sad but they grow up to be happy and healthy bunnies ^_^

I did extensive research on the Chernobyl disaster and its effects in high school (I have some sort of sick fascination of nuclear disasters). There is no evidence of mutations above the amount that occurs naturally in the wildlife surrounding the area.

There is a little white bunny at my local SPCA without ears too!! Spayed female, I almost adopted her on the spot! haha, not the right time in my life though

There was a cat at my SPCA without ears. They named her “Princess Leia” because she had these little nubs that sort of looked like buns. She was white too. Animals with problems like that tend to get adopted quickly because people feel bad for them. She was only there a few weeks.

Lots of bunnies lose ears in their first day or so of life if the mamma is a little over zealous trying to groom them or take care of them and bites off the ears.

He’s very cute though!
