› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › GI Stasis! Smithecon and Critical Care!
I just got home from camping and my dad has been checking in on her every few days and he said as soon as he would walk in the door she was running around trying to get him to pet her ( normal for lulu). But when i walked in she was huddled up in the corner and in an instant, I knew something was wrong. I felt her stomach and it felt like jelly and she wouldn’t move! I gave her some Romain lettuce and she would smell it but wouldn’t eat it. She ate a papaya treat so thats a plus. but she refuses anything else.
my rabbits have never been sick, a day in there life and I have no idea what to do! if she is like this in the morning she is going to the vet. My grandparents are on the way with smithicon and some lettuce and parsley. Please help me!
Can you not get her to the vet asap? There are things you can do at home (massage the tummy) but she really needs to be seen by a vet asap! Keep us posted.
Vets closed!
Update: She walked out of her condo and into the pen area to check it out when the door was open. So that is good. I gave her some more romaine and carrots ( mocha ate the stuff i had before) and put mocha outside in an xpen so he could run around and get some exerciser and put her alone in the middle level of the condo she hasn’t moved sense I put her in there.
Also I don’t know how much smithicon to give her. any one know?
You really need to get her to eat. The Smithicon is good for gas, but you have to get the gut moving. Has she pooped lately?
There is no emergency vet you can take her to? You really don’t want to wait until morning.
Pedialyte and belly rubs. The Pedialyte is full of electrolytes that stimulate muscle contractions and will push whatever is stuck in there out.
You need to make sure there is no blockage before getting her to eat, which can only be done at vet. Once you know there is no blockage, then you can feed Critical Care (Oxbow). Or you can soak some pellets in warm water or chamamile tea until they are soft and fluffy. You can even mix the pellet mush with unsweetened apple sauce or canned pumpkin until it is like pudding. Then feed with a syringe. You have to be careful how you feed it though, (place syringe behind the incisors) as bunnies can aspirate the food. The dosage for Simethicone is 1-2 cc every hour. But that is only for gas relief. It will not solve the problem.
I gave her some smithicone, a belly rub, and some fresh parsley and she is eating it, and is walking around… she is also drank alot of water sense i got home. I wonder if i am over reacting and she is actually fine! I wish there was a way to know. I guess i just have to wait.
Vibes to Lulu, please keep us updated. You should keep critical care on hand.
Sarita: thanks. Yes I know I should. I am going to buy some soon!
we gave her a second dose and she seems almost back to normal now! Yay! ![]()
Get better Lulu!!
(((hugs)))
So happy to hear it! Yay Lulu!
Glad she’s okay.
She probably had a little bout of gas. Stormy gets that sometimes and a dose or two of simethicone perks him right back up.
IMO, the two most important things for a bunny owner to have on hand at all times: Simethicone and Critical Care. If you don’t use it often, make sure to check expiry dates so you always have usable products available if needed.
Update: This morning she ate a little bit of lettuce but not as much as she normally would. I gave her a piece of carrot and after that she ate the top of a lettuce leaf. I gave her another piece of carrot when she was done and she started eating another leaf of lettuce. If she still isn’t eating as much as normal should I give her another dose?
Another weird thing about her is that every time I go in the bunny room, her eyes get wide and she runs and try’s to hide from me. Normally she runs up to me and asks for pets. Could it be because I left for over a week? Normally she gives me the butt, and then she is fine.
I just want my baby to get better. ![]()
Just looked in on her and she didn’t finish her lettuce
she didn’t even eat much of it. :'(
Is she pooping?
Yeah I see some of her poo laying around the cage but not sure how recent it was. I just put a new hay rack on the top level and both bunnys have been chomping away. Lulu has always loved fresh hay. even over her pellets. I guess she just didn’t want much veggies.
I guess just watch her. Has she ever had dental problems before?
Nope. She hasn’t had anything wrong with her before.
If you take her in, you may want to have her teeth looked at.
How did she do today?
She is completely normal… She is as excited for food as normal, and hyper as normal, as curious as normal ( maybe a little to curious… I left the door open and she went to the opposite end of the house. I found her underneath a desk in my parents room. lol) as sweet as normal, ect. I am so glad to have my sweet honey bun back.
I have a few questions… What is the difference between Simethicon and Critical Care? How do you know when to use Simethicon or Critical Care? The Simethicon I got came with a dropper type thing, should I get the normal syringe that you push the liquid out?
Simethicone is an anti-gas remedy. I use the eye dropper that comes with the package. “Ovol” is the brand I use. The dosage I follow is 1 ml per hour for the first 3 hours and then 1 ml every few hours thereafter (this is good for a 3-5lb bunny, a bigger bunny will probably need a bigger dose). After this many doses, if there is no improvement and/or bunny seems to be in pain, it’s most likely not going to help and a vet is needed asap. It doesn’t hurt to give simethicone to a bunny who doesn’t want to eat because it won’t hurt them even if gas is not the issue. When one of my buns doesn’t want to eat I usually give a small dose of simethicone.
Critical Care is a nutrition substitute you can mix with water or juice to force feed a bunny that is unwilling to eat. There is a recommended dosage on the package (depends on how much your bunny weighs). You can use a syringe or eyedropper. It’s important to force feed a bunny that will not eat because after 12-24 hours of nothing going through the digestive system, it will start shutting down which is extremely serious. You can get Critical Care from a rabbit vet and it comes in 2 different flavours.
You have to be extremely careful when force-feeding a bun or giving oral meds. Put the eyedropper on the side of the mouth and squeeze a very small amount in, let bunny chew and swallow, and then repeat. Forcing too much liquid in can result in aspiration (liquid going into lungs) which can lead to more problems.
Hope this helps.
Yes it did. Thank you. The BB store carries Critical Care and I need some litter screens and new toys, so i think I will make an order soon.
also, My grandparents got the walgreens brand. Is that ok?
I don’t think the brand matters, so that is okay for the simethicone.
OK. Thanks! ![]()
Brand of Simethicone does not matter. And there is some debate whether Simethicone works as some vets say that (hope I am phrasing this right) bunnies gas troubles are more “frothy” and Simethicone helps break up gas bubbles- so they doubt the Simethicone works. I assume this is due to the difference of a human GI tract as opposed to how different a herbivore GI tract is. BUT- Simethicone works physically and is not absorbed into the body like a medication- it works on the gas bubbles to break them up and help them pass easier. So with that being the way the body uses it- there are no risks to using Simethicone or overdosing even if you give every couple of hours. I have used it on my bunnies and does it help- hard to say as I have used other vet recommended meds too. Did it hurt? No, certainly not. So some vets might consider it just added hydration as they think it may have no benefit. But personally- it is a theory as to whether it helps or does not help- and I will take ALL THE HELP I can get when my bunnies are ill!
EDIT: glad to hear bunny is back to normal!!!!!
