I haven’t ever watched the show, but I like to get to know people in different areas of the world and quiz them on how things are done in their countries. Bonus, free places to stay when I want to visit a country – I got to stay with a friend in England for 6 months.
Dishwashers only use 6 gallons if you have a less energy efficient one and 4 gallons if you have an energy star one. The average faucet uses 2 gallons per minute. So, if you can wash the entire dishwasher load of dishes in 2 minutes of faucet running, dishwashers are a waste of water. But the typical person who washes dishes by hand uses a lot more water. Most people I know who do it, fill up a deep sink which takes up most of that, then keep the faucet running the _whole_ time to rinse dishes. The average load for a dishwasher is eight place settings and 6 serving pieces (24 inches). So no dishwashers are _not_ wastes of water, on average they save water.
Now, in England the people I met there did not rinse their dishes. They had a shallow sink and a dish rack for drying and just washed the dishes in soapy water, then placed them on the drying rack. No rinsing. Under that method, hand washing is more water efficient. The dishes never left a soapy residue or anything, they used a mild safe dish soap. I asked them if their food didn’t taste like soap because of it and I got that “dumb american” look and a no as an answer. I have taken to washing dishes that way since being over there and seeing how well it works. I have a dish washer, but it’s not even hooked up – I just use it as my drying rack.
Though… I do tend to rinse my pets dishes, just because not everything that is safe for us is safe for them.
It is fun to see how the other countries live though, every time I talk to someone from Europe I end up feeling like a spoiled American – my friend in England lives in a nice flat, no A/C and he doesn’t even own a fan. If it gets warm he just strips down to shorts and a tank top in the house. No dishwasher, no bathtub. He considers them frivolous expenses that are not needed and he isn’t considered weird for it over there. And electric showers are really popular over there, was kind of embarrassing to have to ask how to turn the shower on. lol
