› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Debating whether or not I should quit
You all know that I teach at the university and that I also have a part time retail job that I use to supplement my income. I didn’t have an assignment over the summer so I was really relying on my other job to give me more hours. They didn’t and I found myself in a financial pinch over the summer. So the new school year has started again and I am back to doing that. I only work weekends at my other job, maybe 8-10 hours a week. However, I just learned something today that makes me question whether I should continue to stay there. Are you ready for this? They just announced that they will be changing the dress code this fall. Everyone has to wear black and white. You have to have a black bottom (pants, skirt, etc). Your top has to be white or black and white patterned. Then you have to have a third piece, a black jacket or vest or cardigan.
I about crapped my pants at work today when I heard this! Why? I will need to buy new clothes for this. I never wear black, I don’t own anything black (or black and white patterned for that matter). I don’t even have black shoes (just a pair of black sandals) My wardrobe consists of earthtones and bright colors like pink or blue. What on earth am I supposed to do? I told my husband and he told me I need to quit. I suppose I understand. I mean, it’s silly to buy new clothes just to work on the weekends there. Well, more during the winter break and next summer if I don’t find a new job right away (I am supposed to graduate in May). What would you do?
Ahh, what a tough situation. Jobs are hard to come by these days, so before you actually quit I would make sure I had something lined up first. That way you won’t be stuck without any kind of income. In my opinion, I would definitely look for a new job asap. 8-10 hours a week already seems like it’s not worth it, plus having to buy new clothes for the dress code.
I’d say if you only work weekends there and it’s just a retail job, you could get away with buying some black pants and a top or two (if you don’t have one already )and jacket/sweater and wearing them both days. Nothing wrong with that. Your coworkers may notice but they may not, and even if you do, it’s just a work uniform.
A pair of black pants and a black sweater and white shirt are classic anyway, and who knows when you could pull them out of the closet to wear for other occasions.
Are there any thrift shops near you? You can get a good deal on gently used clothing. There’s a Goodwill outlet not too far from me where they sell clothes BY THE POUND! It’s hit or miss but regardless it’s a very good deal. I started shopping there when I was a grad student and now I’m hooked. It pains me to pay full price on retail.
I remember you saying something before about how you couldn’t get another job because this one interfered. Honestly, I’d drop them and find a new one. Or look while you still work there. ![]()
At 8-10 hours a week, hardly worth it. Though, if you need the extra income, you could buy some cheapish black slacks and a couple of white shirts for not too much (good will, thrift stores, etc). Jobs are hard to come by, so it depends on if you would make more money than you would spend in the long run, whether it’s beneficial or not.
Monkeybun – This job (the retail job) restricts where I can be employed outside of them. If I work there, then I can’t work anywhere else that they would somehow consider “competition”. I think that’s probably what you are thinking of.
For the suggestions of shopping at Goodwill or a thrift store – I thought of that. I don’t usually have good luck finding cloths in those places, but I could try. It’s hard when you need something specific and then it needs to be in the right size. LOL
To tell you all the truth, I don’t really need the job. I mean REALLY need the job. I used to work about 20-25 hours a week there while I was an undergrad. It is what paid the bills. Since I get paid at school now, I am really only working there for extra money during the school year and to help me stay afloat during breaks (that is, if they give me more hours during those times). Plus I buy everyone’s Christmas gifts there since I can get stuff cheap. I looked at some black/white clothes there. Funny, there isn’t a huge selection. You would think they would have ordered a bunch of stuff in since they are expecting everyone to buy new clothes.
It’s weird though. At the same time, I feel somewhat guilty. I have worked there a long time and I know so many people there. Gosh, I don’t know what to think now.
Wow. Depending on where you shop, you’d be looking at spending at least $100-200 on new clothes, assuming two pairs of pants, two shirts, a sweater, AND new shoes. And only working weekends… at my crappy retail job, $200 would equal out to 3 weeks of work (I only work Saturday 8 hours). If they sell clothes, I could see them ordering in what they want employees to wear, selling it deeply discounted (like 50% off), and allowing you to get it slowly deducted from your check (like 5 bucks a week). Ugh… I hate retail.
If you don’t mind my asking (without giving out too much info) is this a chain store or is it locally-owned? Or you can PM me, I’m curious.
Beka – That was what I was figuring. I just read over the 4 page announcement again today. It said no twill pants and nothing that would resemble a t-shirt. I where “t-shirts” to work now. I bought a bunch of these scoop neck t-shirts that are stretchy so they have a nice fitted look. I’ll wear them underneath stuff. I’m not sure how picky they are really going to be about it though. I mean, if you look nice then who cares. BTW, this is a chain store. I’ll pm you.
I think any retail store that requires a certain look provide you with said look. Bah.
Monkeybun – It could be worse. There are places like The Limited that require employees to wear their clothes and they have to be current clothes. I remember a customer talking about it one time. Her daughter wanted to work there so bad, but ended up having to spend her entire pay checks on clothes. Yes, they gave a 40% discount, but the clothes are pretty expensive to begin with. I got a suit there once and the jacket alone was $100.
Still, I think it is stupid for me to have to buy new stuff. I have a whole closet stuffed full of dress clothes and I won’t be able to wear any of it. What a waste.
I received your PM, thank you.
If I were you, I’d be tempted to quit too. You’re looking at spending a lot of money on clothes you will ONLY wear for this job. Save that $100-200 and put it towards your education/finances, and in the meantime, look for a new weekend job. Like you’ve said, this job isn’t entirely necessary… it’s just some extra cash. Does the info specify what day this dress code change goes into effect?
I have over a month. They want it to go into effect before the holiday shopping season starts.
Well, I would quit. Find a different place. There are plenty of places who do have a dress code, but do not require clothes that are going to be small fortune. Target comes to mind for some reason. They do have to wear red shirts and khakis (?) but you could buy a couple of tops and khakis for less than $100 for example. I know JCPenny has a dress code requiring you to wear dressy clothes but it’s not specific colors or anything.
As you know, the holiday season will be starting soon, so you should be able to find another job. Probably even sooner as retail has a high turnover rate.
The announcement was 4 PAGES???!!!! Please tell me there was other announcements in there. lol
Nope, Michelle, it was all about the new dress code and saying what you could/could not wear. LOL
If it isn’t needed and it’s going to cost a lot for you to buy new clothes, I would say quit. The dress code doesn’t seem far fetched to me though, every job I have gotten specified black or khaki slacks or a skirt and plain shirts, with no bright coloring. Shoes always had to be black, nothing open toed. Last job I had, a guy got in trouble for wearing a grey shirt under his uniform because the dress code was black or white only. So you may end up having to buy some black clothes anyway, depending on what is available, if you get a new job.
Well my mom offered to help me with some clothes if I want her to. I suppose I will look around at stuff. In the mean time, I might start asking around to see if there are any field-related jobs out there. The only problem with that is they usually want someone who can work more hours.
Good luck
My job requires black or khaki pants, a white collar shirt/blouse or the grocery’s logo shirts. I bought 2 of the logo shirts that I wear most of the time, and I also have 2 white collared shirts. The logo shirts were quite cheap. We are allowed to wear jeans on certain jeans days, and we pay a dollar. It goes to an injury fund if any worker gets injured.
At my old job (The Japanese store) females would get away with anything, except shorts and flipflops. The men would have to wear slacks, shirt, and tie. I do not understand why to this day lol.
My mom took me shopping and bought me some things. I got a pair of pants and two tops. I still need a long sleeve cardigan or something and some shoes.
