I’m reposting this from my blog so that I don’t have to type it all again. —
I took Gus over to the rescue this morning to see if we could find him a friend. He was a very well behaved bunny with all 3 of the girls he met. The first two bunnies, Buttercup and Sylvia, he met one at a time and they were both really sweet little buns. He was indifferent towards both of them. It was the same situation for both of them too. They would sniff each other then hop away and act aloof. I was actually pretty happy with that outcome, I was just glad there was no fighting. But then we tried the last little girl, Madonna. She is actually Gus’ sister, they came into the shelter together, but she hasn’t been the friendliest towards other buns. As soon as we put her in the pen with Gus he immediately ran over to her and gave her a sniff. It seemed like they remembered each other! After a few minutes she started chasing him around and mounting him, but not aggressively. I think she just wanted to make sure that he remembered who was boss! Near the end of the session (about an hour) they were cuddling and Gus was grooming her face & ears!! They seemed so happy to have each other! I couldn’t be more please with how everything turned out. Madonna (I might change her name to Henrietta) is home with us now. I separated them for now to let her get used to being in our house. Here are some adorable pics:

Grooming, can you see Gus’ tongue?

They were doing so well, that they rode home in the same carrier together, and now they’re playing in the kitchen. The new girl bunny seems right at home. She’s playing with the toys, running through the tunnel, eating, drinking, etc. I don’t know if Gus is too sure about all of this yet, but he’s always been so laid back that he doesn’t seem bothered.
That’s so sweet that they’re brother and sister (: Both of them are adorable! I love hearing about stories about bunnies who got rescued heehee
OMG *HEAD EXPLODE* SO CUTE! I WANT I WANT!!
*explodes too* OMG SUCH CUTENESS!!!!! *stands in the I WANT line*
So adorable!!!! That’s super sweet that they remember each other.
Madonna is beautiful! I love the second last pic. ![]()
Thanks guys!!
We’re on Day #2 now. The dominance struggle is getting a little more complicated. Gus is starting to take charge. He’s mounting more and not allowing Madonna/Henrietta (still haven’t decided on the name lol) to mount as much. But she still demands grooming. She’ll go over and shove her head under Gus’ face or body until he grooms her. Then he’ll groom her face and mount some more. She lays down while he’s mounting and doesn’t seem bothered by it. But if she tries to mount Gus he runs away and sometimes thumps once or twice. They are still respectful of each other though. No one is getting hurt and they are still cuddling together when not running around. They seem happier together than apart. Madonna/Henrietta was separated into the temp cage over night and she was not happy about it. She was cage aggressive towards me and made a mess of everything in the cage. When she’s with Gus though she lets me pet her and has even bumped her nose on me a couple times to get more pets. Such a silly girl. We’ll see what happens in the next couple of days. I’ll try to get some more pics/video up here.
That sounds promising. The male sounds like he wants to be the dominate one. As long as there are no fights, it sounds like it is going well!
Congrats on the new addition! Just reading the info you posted makes them sound like a typical (human) brother and sister (minus the humping
) LOL.
Oh they are so precious! Yay, new bunny
Day #3 – They’re still getting along! I do have one problem though. Henrietta (the new bun) is peeing/pooing everywhere! She isn’t using the litter box at all. The rescue said that she is litter trained, so I guess she’s trying to mark her territory. Do you think this will let up once she feels comfortable and at home? How long do you think this will last? Luckily Gus is still using the box as usual.
They certainly do look happy – congratulations!
they really are adorable you are so lucky!!!
Thanks for all the compliments everyone! They seem to be having a lot of fun playing together.
Day #4 – There is still territorial pooping from Henrietta. And their cage is super stinky!!! It doesn’t smell like poop though. It smells like rotten onions *gag* I have no idea where this smell is coming from. Do you think it’s something Henrietta is producing? Either through her body or urine? Should I check her glands or bathe her bottom? What do you think? I know when my husband gets home from work he won’t be thrilled with the smell – LOL I opened the window to air out the room a little. I’ve been trying to clean up the poops as much as possible, but it doesn’t seem to matter right now, she just replaces them with more.
So it must be the poop that smells so bad! I just did a thorough vacuuming and it smells much better (for now)! She also let me hold her for a few minutes to look her over and make sure her body or glands aren’t actually stinky (they aren’t). Her paws and bum and still kind of dirty from running around on the ground at the rescue, but at least she’s not smelly. I just hope she stops marking all over the place with her poop soon!
I just uploaded a video from Day 2:
At the very end, Henrietta tried to mount Gus’ face, so I had to turn off the camera and separate them. ![]()
They are just like two peas in a pod. Very cute.
It’s pretty good that they are both willing to groom.
