I have been givng oats as Lolli’s treat.  Yes, I know I need to quit doing this.  lol    She LOVES the bunny biscuit/treats that I made her.  But I have a question on ingredients.  It calls for 1/4 cup each of ground pellets and oats.  Is there anything to subsitute the oats for that’s healthier?  Would it work to just double the pellets?  Or add maybe a 1 or 2 tablespoons of flour?  I know very little of baking/cooking – especially when it comes to her.

The recipe also calls for a teaspoon of honey and then of course fruit.  I leave out the honey cause I figure the fruit makes it sweet enough.  She doesn’t care.  She’ll eat them after I burn them.  LOL   I just need her to lose some weight and since she can’t run around the house, this is the only way I can think of.

When I made treats, all I would use is ground pellets, fruit, and a dash of 100% juice for moisture…and the bunnies went crazy for them! Also, I found it way too difficult to actually crush the Oxbow pellets, but figured out that if you add just a tiny bit of water they come apart pretty much on their own. I was baking them one day and my friend came in and asked what smelled so good…I told he he could try one if he wanted!

I use a coffee grinder on the pellets. LOL Ok, I will just leave out the oats then. Thanks! I seriously hardly ever cook or bake and when I do, I usually don’t have to omit ingredients that seem crucial to the recipe. I guess I just need to cook more often.

The last batch I made, I seriously burned them. And I didn’t think Lolli would eat them, but she did. I think she likes them more than her oxbow treats. lol

I found using a lower temp oven but baking for longer helps. I did some using pellets, hay cubes (when I soaked them they broke down to be mixed) I did use some oats. I used a bit of banana (really small amount) as a binder and for flavour. You only need the littlest amount but they still get wind of that banana smell and go crazy. I also did some using mashed pumpkin or sweet potato to bind and again only need little amount.
I’d rather use fruit sugars then honey.

There’s a company that does straight, 100% hay pellets. They’d be a good option to bulk out the mix. Can’t remember the original one I was thinking of this one does them: http://midvalleymillinghaypellets.com/

Seconded on the low temp/longer baking time…if you think about it, the only purpose of baking the treats is to make them solid and dry. When we bake human treats, there are raw ingredients that need to be cooked, and heat is required for the batter to rise into dough, but there’s none of that in the bunny treats. So heat isn’t too important…it’s just a lot easier to feed dried baked treats than wet treat mush!

I might mix some up and just put them in the car to cook….lol 108 again today. I have a jar where I save all the pellet pieces, I think I have enough to try some now.
