I’ve been looking into getting a companion for Penelope and I was just wondering if the bunny I get needs to be a male. It seems that almost all of the stories I’ve read have been about bonding a male and female bunny. Just wondering if it really matters and what seems to work the best.

From what I’ve gathered, bonding a male to a female is the EASIEST bond.  That being said, gender doesn’t really matter, it’s more of how quickly and easily will they bond? Two females are USUALLY the most difficult to bond, but every pair is different. The best thing to do is take Penelope and let HER pick out her friend

I would start your search with males. Two females can bond but it can be really difficult since female rabbits are the most territorial and will fight to protect “their” space. And not all females bond. If another female “fell into your lap”, I’d say give it a try… but if you have the luxury of meeting a variety of rabbits, start with neutered males.
