Ok, within the last 7-10 days Bun-Bun’s poops SMELL!

Nothing has changed food/water/diet-wise in the almost 3 months we have had him, except the type of hay. We bought a bag of Timothy Hay and used it, got Oat Hay at the pet store the 2nd time but he has been using that for over a month and the smell started more recently.

He is acting normal and his poops are hard little balls like normal but the smell is GROSS!

Litter box is cleaned daily. Did it last night, put it back, he hopped in and pooped and WHEW!

His age is unknown since he was rescued off the street and was/is a full grown adult.

        Any ideas?

Is he neutered? The only time my buns droppings smelled was when he was marking and unaltered and the smell was pretty ripe. Has anything changed recently that would cause him to need to mark territory?

I would take a sample in just to be safe and let the vet check him + his droppings out.

Sounds like he needs to be neutered. Does he have.. er, his bits?

Sounds like a needs-to-be-neutered thing to me as well, but its never a bad thing to get the poops checked out

Hmmm neutered-but perhaps you could be smelling cecals (The squishy gross poopies they should be eating)-we’ll need more info definitely

Yeah, could be territorial poops. Normal round poops with slightly shiny look to them.

No new animals or people in the house he’s unaccustomed too?
Even someone else cleaning his box or cage from the norm?
                  Not a new litter box?

Not neutered, that is on agenda as soon as we can afford it.
We have had him for almost 3 months and this is a new development.
No new animals, no new people. Only one that cleans up his stuff is me(as if I could get anyone else to get off their lazy butts and clean!LOL).
Litter box is same. Litter has changed but almost a month because he wasnt using it and we(this group) figured out he was afraid of the pellets. But litter is same as bedding was. No bedding now, just in litter box.
Could be marking, but no clue why since nothing has changed.

It reminds me(the smell) of when our cat(now deceased) and our dog(also deceased) were getting old, didnt process stuff well and eventually had to be put down from old age. Dog had stomach cancer. Cat had always had a sensitive stomach and as she got older, not only did it get worse but she lost control of bowels, etc. so we had to put her down.
Do bunnies poop smells change as they get old?

                      I don’t think so…
Generally, their poop doesn’t smell either (aside from those territorial ones). Maybe a fecal test is in order as suggested.

That is what I thought….. will call vet to see about getting one done.
                        Thanks!

If the poops look normal but they just are smelly, then he could be using his anal glands to add a little lovely scent to each one. Also, are you sure it only his poops —have you noticed any spraying? Check walls, the cage, etc for spray marks — can be clear, but many times will leave a light residue of a dried drip. I know…gross. It’s just something that can be visually missed IF the urine is clear enough. (which many times it is).
