Around 2:00 this afternoon a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the northern Virginia/DC area. Which BBers felt it?

I’m up in the Hudson Valley and we felt it! My first earthquake! It just seemed like someone was shaking the walls of my cubicle, and then it stopped. A lot of people went outside, but most of us stayed in and eventually they made an announcement that all was fine. Darn – I was hoping they’d evacuate and then I would just go work from home. We might have some issues with chips processed today – whenever anything happens (like a power dip during a thunderstorm) we end up with problems, so I hope we don’t lose too much money from damage to wafers that were processing when it happened.

I hope those in the DC area are ok! I hear that there isn’t much, if any, damage, but one of my best friends lives down there so I hope she’s doing ok (along with the new house she just bought).

There was also a 5.3 earthquake in southern Colorado last night. I was awake when it happened, but I didn’t feel a thing.

          Where do you work?

I heard about the Colorado one! Good thing you didn’t feel it – probably better that way. I bet a bunch of people in my area didn’t feel it either, but we did because we were just sitting at our desks when it happened. It’s all anyone at work has been talking about for the last hour.

I work for a company that makes computer/videogame/server/cellphone/etc chips, so that should narrow it down to about two options 😉

My mother called from WV to ask if we felt it here in NY. She told us that it shook the house and was pretty loud, but when she called some of her neighbors, she found out that many of them were oblivious to it! I’m near the Finger Lakes region, and we didn’t feel it at all. Hopefully all is well with your friend (and her new house), Elrohwen. I have family in that area, too.

Silly, kind of off topic, but I love the Finger Lake area! One of my favorite places ever.

Funny that some people find it so obvious and others didn’t notice – it must really be effected by what type of building you’re in or if you’re in a building at all. My mom sort of felt it in Pittsburgh, but she thought it was just the construction going on next door and didn’t realize it was an earthquake until someone told her 5min later.

Mineral, VA isn’t Northern VA. Just sayin’. But it did affect us.
I felt it pretty bad here in NoVA. It shook EVERYTHING, and I’m surprised nothing fell over in my house or my boss’ house (where I was at the time of the quake).
My college cancelled classes for the rest of the day; all government buildings evacuated for the day (not just the Pentagon, as reported. I know for sure Fort Belvor and the Navy Yard are evacuating too); the roads are a mess because like 90% of the residents here work for either the government or a contractor. (I can think of a whooping 1 neighbor who doesn’t). Aside from that, there’s not much real damage aside from broken picture frames and assorted items on shelves in some homes.
However, the buns took a bit of calming (I got off work 6 minutes after the quake – I was supposed to only work til 2 anyway) and my dog is still freaking out.

Oh, and HJ and my other friends in Hampton Roads (Newport News, Norfolk, and VA Beach) said they felt it, but it wasn’t bad.

Oh, I heard it was centered in northern VA – I didn’t hear a specific town. I guess it’s even more surprising that we felt it all the way up here.

The national news is nuts, then. Mineral is closer to Richmond.

Im in ocean county NJ, and as I was getting out of bed (Ive been pretty sick lately thus the reason for being in bed so late) and I noticed the tv shaking, I thought it was just me, but then my bf shot up and said get out of the house ( he thought my house was collapsing).  Best part of it all Cady was laying on top of the hideaway hut and didnt even move…lol guess my bunnys arent good indicators of natural disasters   On another funny side note, when we went outside my one neighbor ran out of her house and threw her kids in the car, she said she was getting off the island in case of a tsunami lol it was pretty funny…

Apparently it was felt all the way up here towards Providence, RI. They evacuated the state buildings. I live towards the southern part of the state but I didn’t feel a thing. I was sleeping.

I really love it, too. The winters are much too long, compared to what I was used to in WV, though.

LOL, TaraMichele. That’s funny about your neighbor.  A friend of mine posted a link to a photo of the quake’s “damage” on FB; it showed a table and chairs on a lawn, and one of the chairs had fallen over on to the ground. Seriously, though, it’s a relief to know the quake did very little harm.

I live in Northeast Ohio. I was laying on the couch watching tv and felt the couch shake. My first reaction “Oh no, the bunnies finally tapped into their super powers and are extremely mad I didn’t feed them yet!” lol! My first earthquake too! A little scary, I figured it was an earthquake or my couch was haunted.

It was even felt in New Brunswick. Not in my city but in Fredericton which is about an hour and a half drive from here. They evacuated some buildings there. We’re all wusses about stuff like that here. Glad I didn’t feel it. I’m super paranoid about natural disasters despite having never experienced one.

I’m in Delaware and feel like the only one here who didn’t notice it! I was in the car on the way to the grocery store (10 min from home), and everyone at the store was talking about it and how they felt it in there (before I arrived)…my husband called while I was there to see if I was okay and I was clueless! He was calling from Florida (he’s away on business)..news travels fast! Later I talked to my neighbor and she said the windows were rattling and her kids were all worked up, so our neighborhood definitely felt it too… So I must be a weirdo of some sort…or you don’t feel it as much in a car?

Ali, I would guess that you don’t feel it as much in a car – I was actually talking to some co-workers about that and we agreed that if you were driving you probably wouldn’t notice since it was short and not very intense. Interesting that you proved our theory!

I hate earthquakes…so scary. Even though I am in California and should be used to them, they are just one of those things you never will get used to. You are helpless at the moment and can just do what you have been taught about getting to the strongest structure point, but it’s that “sound” they can sometimes make prior to the shake that puts me into a panic.

Did you hear the rumbling prior to the shake?

The other day we had a smaller earthquake–3 something, but we were just a few miles from the epicenter and the shake wasn’t as bad as the deep rumble prior. I barely even felt the shake but it sounded like a big one was coming, and I remember just freezing, waiting for it to come.

I’m with you Lintini—earthquakes are enough — I’d be gone with hurricanes and tornadoes.

I think I would prefer hurricanes to earthquakes. At least you can see them coming and be prepared.

I agree about preferring hurricanes to earthquakes!

BB, I didn’t hear any kind of rumbling and don’t know anyone who did, but then again our building is made of concrete (think former Soviet block type architecture, ugh) so I probably wouldn’t have been able to hear anything. I always wondered if they made noise before they hit – I guess they do.

I love living in the northeast precisely because we don’t have a lot of natural disasters. By the time hurricanes hit they’re typically just bad rainstorms (Irene is the worst I can remember in this area). And until this week we never had earthquakes that I knew about.
