I was woken up this morning around 4 a.m. when I heard a wood-gnawing sound coming from the hallway. I figured Bindi got out and was chewing the baseboards. Nope, all the bunnies were in their condos. Then I heard it again. Coming from the attic. When I shouted to Ricky, the sound stopped.
I’m assuming it’s a squirrel because my neighbor is a bird feeder freakshow and has like 3 dozen bird feeders (no, I’m not exagerating) in her yard and she encourages birds (including pigeons) and squirrels to live and nest in her yard. I’ve seen her feed racoons too. Such a pain in the butt as we live in a busy part of the City, but on a little dead end street. This woman seriously needs to move to the country. We have at least 3 squirrels that frequent our yard thanks to her. There was one living and nesting in our old shed but we tore it down this summer (there were no babies in it) and put up a new metal shed so it makes sense the critter is looking for a new place to live.
I’m concerned because I know they can do a lot of damage, even cause fires if they gnaw wires. Ricky is going to go into the attic tonight when he gets home from work. I want to use humane methods if we need to trap it. We have to go outside tonight too and see if we can see an entry point. We have huge maple trees on our front lawn that squirrels could easily use to get access to our roof.
Anyone ever dealt with this before?
I want to say something to this neighbour but the people on the other side of me told her a few years back to quite feeding pigeons and she didn’t and is now super hostile towards them.
Oh goodness! DH had squirrels in the attic of the house he rented during college. He had a lot of luck with a trap baited with peanut butter. Those squirrels were so angry when we caught them! We drove them out into the woods and dropped them off, but since the hole in the roof was never fixed new ones kept coming in. At one point they put a hole in his ceiling even.
I would trap him (and his friends, if there are more than one) and try to figure out how they’re getting in and seal that off. It’s annoying that the neighbor doesn’t see why it’s a problem to attract so much wildlife, but maybe she’ll see the light once she has wild animals running around her house.
You can get a live trap and set it up there. Put something really good in there that the squirrel won’t be able to resist.
Yes, a trap is the best way to do it, but you’re gonna want to find that entry point. I had raccoons in my chimney last year. I had to put a trap on my roof to get the mother (we used dog food and peanut butter). Then, I had to physically remove the babies using a net and a broom stick. I put a wire mesh over the chimney to keep them out, but they ended up just ripping it open and getting in again. Long story short… it was a horrible ordeal.
I’m sorry you’ve got such a nuisance neighbor My best advice… make sure they can’t get back in!
everyplace i’ve lived, i always try to turn my yard into a critter sanctuary.
We had a birdfeeder in Jacksonville that we could see from our kitchen window. I was so excited because the birdfood kept disappearing so quickly! I thought I was making the birds happy, even though I couldn’t understand why I never saw them on the feeder…
Then one night I saw the true nommers of the food of our feeder… several extremely happy-looking rats.
Longhairmike, things like this,

are *your* fault.

i had another uninvited one this morning,, trying to crash the bunny/quail party.
i sternly called him a butthole and kicked him out…
Creepy…Well I guess I can be thankful there are no snakes around here (well some but not that big!). That is one creature I have no love for. Are there poisonous snakes where you live, longhairmike?
Lizzie- That rat is seriously cute. As long as it stays OUTSIDE!
Last night, Ricky checked the attic and couldn’t find any signs of life up there: No damage or droppings. He wasn’t able to get up onto the roof because it got dark but he’s checking that tonight. No noises last night either. We know we heard something! I’m glad he didn’t find damage but now this is unresolved and annoying.
Lizzy, my dad used to feed the birds – the feeders weren’t accessible by squirrels or rats, but one day we found a rat sitting on the ground under the tree, eating whatever the birds had dropped. Eek! The pest guy said the rats probably kicked all of the chipmunks out of their burrows and took over (he was right – we hadn’t seen any chipmunks for a while). Glad the rats are gone, but I’ll never feed the birds after that.
yes arizona has tons of rattlesnakes, however i have only seen one while out on the trails so far,, people were telling me that the one in my yard yesterday was a non-venemous whipsnake.. they grow to up to 8″ long and they’re super-fast, but they usually take off running when they see a person. that one was only half the size
I personally put food out for the squirrels and birds, though honestly water is more important to provide in this heat. It’s possible you could have mice in your attic, or anything like that… at the last apartment complex I lived in, there was a possum that got up in the roof while it was being repaired, poor little guy had to be removed – but any animal can / will nest in a house if they have access, there were no animal feeders at the apartment either. A live trap with a little peanut butter and some sunflower seeds (if it is the bird feeders that attracted whatever, then sunflowers are likely to be a big hit with ti) should work to remove whatever is up there.
When I lived in Florida with my mother she has 5 acres of land (fenced off) and 1 acre is pond. We had cottonmouths nesting under the house once, rattlers and cottons in our yard a few times a year. I nearly got struck pulling my dumb dog away because he decided to protect me from the snake and try to kill it, it struck just as I got him pulled away from it and hit air. Had 3 snakes crawl in through the doggy door (NEVER have a doggy door again) into our house, but they were all harmless corn/rat snakes. And an alligator came into our yard once, about 4-5ft long. o.O Needless to say, dogs required a lot of supervision.
longhairmike, ugh!! I would have been screaming like a little girl and running the opposite direction. Just watching the video gave me the heebiejeebies!! *yuck*
Living in Texas, we have plenty of snakes but ***knock on wood*** I very rarely seem them in our neighborhood.
lol, yeah the rats were actually pretty cute, which is why I wasn’t to mad : D
Do any of you watch Billy the Exterminator? I usually hate reality TV but I actually like this show (although the snakes and bug episodes make me cringe). I don’t have cable but I try to catch it whenever I’m at Moms.
Speaking of bird feeder……
A coworker has a bird feeder out in her yard and it was one that’s supposedly only accessible to birds. One night she woke up to noises outside. She couldn’t figure out what it was so she got up and looked out her window. 4 raccoons were out there at the bird feeder. She couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw one raccoon on the back of another, reaching up and shaking the bird feeder to knock the feed out! She said it was the funniest thing she’s ever seen. LOL
I love Billy! And the cute little baby raccoons that cover their eyes when they are caught!
