I’ve heard that baking soda is not good for rabbits, despite it being included in many litters. It’s probably not good for them to eat, but someone else may have a more detailed explanation as to why.
For the hay, because it makes up about 90% of the diet, I think it’s best to use the highest quality hay you can find. The BinkyBunny store has really good hay that comes in mini bales and they last quite a while. If you try them, I recommend getting a few bales at a time, as the shipping doesn’t increase much with weight… it’s *almost* flat rate. Do you have any rabbit-specific shelters near you? Often times they have a store in order to bring in money to maintain the shelter and they usually have really cheap, but GOOD, hay! I got a giant bag for $4.. Hehe. I’m not sure about the Wal-Mart hay, although I don’t really like Wal-Mart for pet supplies as they usually don’t carry very good quality products. If you do get it, make sure it’s pesticide free and GREEN! Hope that helps some!

I’m not entirely sure if it would make her sick but with rabbits it’s better to not take the chance. You should be able to exchange the bag even if you’ve opened it. I think the saltiness of the soda would be tempting for a rabbit so yes, she may want to eat it. Just eating too much litter even without the soda could cause problems. If you can take it back, maybe you can fashion a screen to put over it in the litterbox until you’ve used it up.

From what I can tell Prairie is just the brand name not the type of hay? Anyway, timothy grass hay is a great hay for rabbits. Sometimes bagged hay can be dusty and unappealing but there are plenty of brands available. Or you can buy it in a small bale. I did just looked at some pictures of that brand and the hay in some looked suspiciously too green.  Be aware that hay is sometimes coloured to make it look better. I might be mistaken as I did see other pics where the hay looked more regular.

I would NOT recommend a litter with baking soda- bunnies do not have paw pads, they have very furry feet and they clean their feet often. Baking Soda is high in sodium (salt) which is not recommended- and baking soda could possibly react with the natural acid in a bunnies stomach and give them a belly ache- or change the ph of their gut. I do not have any documented cases of this- but better safe than sorry. Just a vet exam alone if bunny gets ill makes it a better financial choice to not use the litter. Try to return or exchange it.

I should add, the pic I added on the right could just be the packaging that make the hay appear too green. I don’t know these products at all.

If you live near PetSmart, they have Oxbow Hay, which is usually a good brand of hay, although hay can be variable. They make several different varieties such as Timothy, orchard grass, botanical hay (Timothy with a few herbs and flowers mixed in) oat hay and an organic meadow hay, plus alfalfa, which is best for young rabbits. I like Zupreem Timothy hay too, but I can only get that at online stores. I have ordered hay from the Binky Bunny store, and it is good hay also.

Hi! is the litter you’re talking about Yesterday’s News? I’ve been using it for my guinea pigs and rabbits for years, I’ve never noticed if it has baking soda in it, I really hope it doesn’t ):

I don’t think that Yesterday’s News has baking soda in it. I have never seen it listed on the bag. I just went to the YN website and it doesn’t mention anything about baking soda being added to it.

Through a search, I just found some recycled paper pellet litters that do have baking soda. One is called Fresh News Cat Litter. The Petco Paper Pellet Litter also has baking soda added.

Well when i rescued my rabbit from the rescue group they put baking soda on the bottom of the litterbox then wood stove pellets on top of that. I didn’t like that idea so i didn’t continue to use it.
