Hey bunny slaves!
Was just wondering if you had any tips on storing lettuce and herbs? They seem to keep turning brown on me no matter what I do. Last thing I tried was wrapping the lettuce/herbs in a wet paper towel and placing them in a ziplock bag. While it worked for a tad longer than just throwing them in the fridge, I was more or less annoyed with the papertowel.![]()
Oh and don’t suggest growing my own herbs. Tried that. Definately don’t have a green thumb.![]()
when I just had cady I would buy the produce bags and just put a dry paper towel to absorb the excess water and they seemed to work pretty well, now I go through them so quick it doesnt even matter
I just keep them in the original bag in the crisper.
I’m going to move this thread to the Diet and Care section later today (or if someone else comes along, they might).
I wrap my veggies in dry paper towels and put them in the crisper drawer, and depending what it is, I can get 5-7 days out of them. The last couple days I might have to peel off the outermost wilty leaves, but the insides are still good.

I just keep them in the bags from the grocery store and stack them in the fridge. I usually buy romaine, green leaf, and parsley and all last a full week (I try to use the green leaf first, since it goes bad faster). I find if you buy the hardier varieties there isn’t a problem with storage. If you want to buy the more delicate herbs, just use them all in the first couple days.
I have a veggie keeper especially for Hodari’s stuff. It’s made by Progressive International, and it cost less than ten bucks at Amazon. Her greens stay fresh much longer now. Even the delicate ones last more than a week, so she gets to eat virtually everything I buy now until it is gone. If I have an overabundance of stuff from the garden, I also use the green produce bags with a dry paper towel wrapped around the greens/herbs. They make a difference, too. We get them at the dollar store.
My store has this plastic container to keep their spring mixes in and it works awesome – keeps the veggies crisp and fresh, I just wash out the container when it’s empty and use it for the bagged veggies, with two buns my vegs never go brown before they can eat them. Before that I just put dry paper towels into the veggies and it would help keep it fresher for a little while, but a container made specifically for veggies seems to work best.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I think I’m going to look into the veggie keeper (thanks SS) especially since I found out I’m getting some veggies from my uncles garden and lots too!
The vegetable keeper is awesome. I saw an old thread on here and bought one. I was so happy I ordered one more for myself and another one for a friend. Most vegetables and herbs can be kept longer than 2 weeks in it and wilted vegetable can be put into it to be “fixed.”
Be careful about not over packing it. When I get dandelions, it’s usually too much to fit in there without over packing and results in some going bad. Also, keep lid away from the buns; it’s very yummy =P.

I also wrap my veggies in a dry paper towel and then it goes in a plastic bag. If the paper towel gets too wet, I’ll replace it with a fresh paper towel. Are you washing the veggies right before serving? As opposed to washing when you get the veggies home from the market.
I wash them twice, I do all the cutting washing and dry them out when I get home, then give them a quick rinse before eating (us or Arthur). I just got the veggie keepers and love them so far!

I usually just stick them in ziplock bags. I only buy the double zip ones, seems to work well, I buy every other week or so I guess.
I wash my greens, then spin them dry in a salad spinner. Then I barely dampen a paper towel and use a good quality baggie. I don’t think I have ever gotten 2 weeks from this method, but the drier the veg is the better, so the paper towel gets the extra moisture ![]()
I think sometimes over thinking things is actually counterproductive. I’d say, put em in a ziplock and be done. You could ziplock them individually in smaller bags, then put those ziplocks in a big freezer ziplock bag. Thats what I do with my chicken and veges when I freeze them. I just foil and then freezer bag the meats. I’m sure that method would work in the fridge as well. Anyhow good luck!
What I’ve read is that all vegetables and fruit give off gas, and that gas causes them to go bad. So you would want to not bundle them up in a bag so that the gas can escape.
(this touches on it, but not the best link http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_gas_does_rotting_fruit_produce but it does back up what I do-which is split up bananas and not store together-together they make themselves rot, apart they last much longer
I line my veggie crisper with paper towel and take veggies out of their bags. But with my large crew, and being a vegetarian myself-we’re usually out before anything can go bad ![]()
I’m not expecting them to last two weeks, I was hoping at least a week maybe. They just seemed to be going bad on me in two or three days which was so wasteful. I did get the Veggie keeper (actually one of each size) and I love love love them!
Kokaneeandkahlua, you’re right, it’s the ethylene gas that makes your fruits and veggies go bad. I have these things called blue apples that you put in with your vegetables that is supposed to absorb this gas. I’ve only had it for about two months now but I love it and definitely saw a change! Just throwing them in my veggie draw got me 3-4 extra days
And because Penelope seems to only like the veggies that tend to go bad quicker I need all the time I can get! ![]()
