Poor little guy, his first lap of zooms around the apartment this morning after I let him out, and he slipped in the bathroom and broke a nail on his front paw REALLY close up, it looked like the entire nail was going to come off.  He was bleeding more than I was comfortable with (a drop or two of blood I’d have just used the QuickStop powder), so off to the vet we went.

This was actually his first vet visit, and they luckily fit him in right away.  They trimmed off the nail that was just hanging, and luckily he’s got a tiny bit of the nail left, so the entire thing didn’t come off.  They trimmed the hair around the nail to help keep it clean, trimmed his other nails for good measure, and he was all set.

I cleaned out his cage extra-super good so the paw will have a clean surface, and showered him with kale and pineapple (his two favorite foods).  He’s doing much better now, acting normal, eating fine, hopping around like usual.  I don’t think his paw is too sore, thank goodness.

Just a little PSA to all the members here, make sure you find a rabbit-savvy vet the second you get your bunny, even if bunny doesn’t need to be seen right away.  I’ve had Zeus about a year now and he’s never been to the vet, but I made sure to find a small exotics vet right when I got him.  I was very thankful for that this morning, I knew exactly where to go and wasn’t scrambling to find a place that would take him!  They did a great job as well, and definitely were comfortable with rabbits.

I’m just so glad he’s ok, and doing better now.  Poor little boy had me worried!

Glad he’s ok ! My vet keeps our buns nails short (just barely see them past the foot fur) for that reason, buns are so prone to catching their nails on the floor doing their wild antics.

And yes always good to have a vet on call just in case – and an emergency 24 hour vet as well for those late night / weekend emergencies. Both of mine went to the vet pretty quickly, they needed altered so got an exam/surgery. I love our vet – he’s so good with the bunnies are always takes time to explain how things went

Yeah I keep Zeus’s nails nice and short, can’t see them at all sticking out of the foot fur, so I guess it was just a freak accident thing.  I asked them if I was keeping his nails too long or something and they said no.

Good point on the emergency vet as well!  I have their number programmed into my phone, written on my fridge, and I’ve driven by it a few times to be sure I know where it is.

Tell Zeus to be more careful! He can’t go scaring his family like that, he should slow down a bit on those floors.

Yeah I’m going to put down a rug in the bathroom so if he wants to do zooms in there he’ll have a bit of traction. .

Maybe I should put up some speed limit signs?

Oreo broke hers a few months ago…she got it caught in one of those little holes on the top of the cable box (where she wasn’t supposed to be anyway..) and was caught hanging mid-air by her nail! Poor thing… Anyhow, it was a LOT of blood too..I was very freaked out. I think her whole nail came off, but I think that’s often better because it’s not as painful as if there’s a piece of nail left ? Maybe I’m wrong. She was obsessive enough about licking it and managed to stop the bleeding all on her own… Thankfully for us! Not so much for our beige carpet though… Luckily a neighbor had a steam cleaner to take care of that at 11pm at night! Hope Zeus is doing well And you got a nail trim out of the way by making the vet visit, so that’s always a treat in my book!!

Oh poor Zeus! >_< I'm glad he's okay though. Tell him he may be the God-King of the Bunnies, but he'd better keep it to 75 MPH rounding those corners!
Please give him a snuggle from me and noserubs from my three.
