The vet told us to get a dropper in case Powder doesn’t drink by the end of the day, put some water into him that way. So we go up to the pharmacy and ask for one (it’s a local one, so you have to ask for things) the guy who runs the place asks what we need it for and boyfriend tells him. The guy starts saying how he when he was younger bred rabbits for pets( ugh?) and kept them OUTSIDE in a hutch (he outlined it with his hands, tiny) with a grate on the bottom and over the summer it got too hot… and boyfriend cut him off and told him if he finished the story I would be upset. Well, yeah, already was biting my tongue to not say anything. The guy was laughing and smiling as he told his “story”. Yeah… we’re here to get something to treat our rabbit with and you’re telling us this story? What kind of person seems PROUD of that?  *sigh*

If it wasn’t for the fact going off on him would cause problems with the boyfriend around town + at work since it’s such a tiny town, argh.

Something like this happened to me when I took Velvateen to the vet a few months ago! Another lady was at the receptionist desk waiting for her receipt and looked in my carrier and said how cute Velvateen was and how her son got two rabbits and they ended up having babies and that there were like 50 of them (!!!!!!!!!!!!) and they were oh-so-cute. I looked at my boyfriend and then I said something like, “Yeah, it’s completely unforgivable how people treat these poor animals. I hope SOMEONE taught him a lesson” and then turned my nose up at her. Certainly not the best thing to say, but I was so angry that this woman was proud of her son having 50 BABY BUNNIES. Ugh.

I feel for both of you, Stickerbunny and Tate. It is very hard not to react with outrage when people are so ignorant about these poor animals! Someone I know is breeding snakes, which, yeah I know, it’s snakes… But this is an important matter too! There are enough homeless animals in the world, over-bred, badly treated… And how people can’t automatically see this is a problem is beyond my understanding.

For what it’s worth, snakes are treated just as poorly as rabbits by the breeders. They are usually kept in a “rack system” which is basically like those plastic bin shelving units… very small spaces, generally no light (although most snakes- at least common snakes- don’t need any light) or logs to climb on or under. They are kept this way until they sell and they aren’t even able to stretch out, usually they have to stay curled up. :\

Yeah, all animals are treated poorly honestly – puppies kept in kennels out in the yard by mills/backyard breeders, cats, etc. Exotics have it rough because so many otherwise animal loving people know / care little about exotics … went to one reptile store a few years ago and as soon as you walk in the door first thing you saw was a large metal trough like they use to water horses with so many snakes in them that they are crawling all over each other – it was awful!
