  I woke up this morning to find a small amount of blood in Penelope’s condo. So of course, I rushed her off to the vet to have him check her out. He flushed her insides and didn’t find any blood in her urine or stool so he told me that it’s most likely coming from the uteris. He said the bleeding is most likely caused by a small tumor on the uteris, or it could be…two other things I don’t remember the name of, but that spaying her would resolve the problem. I’ve been planning on having her spayed anyway, I’ve just been having to put aside a little money every paycheck before I could get it done. Luckily, I have the best vet in the whole entire world, and he’s letitng me make payments (he did this with her eye surgery too!) He’s keeping her over the weekend to keep an eye on her to make sure nothing changes and will do the surgery Monday morning. Healing vibes please!!
  
  Also, suggestions for healing and healing time for female rabbits would be awesome too. Anything I shouldn’t do or feed her in the first week or so? I’ve read through some of the post in here and it looks like female rabbits take longer to heal than males. How much longer? Anything special I need to do, or to buy?

  It’s good it’s being done. I assume from your post that she is an adult, and the longer you wait with females, the higher the risk of cancer.
  
  Make sure she eats like normal up until the surgery. You should get pain meds for after. Keep her confined as best you can for at least 5-7 days, no jumping. She’ll probably eat hay and veggies first, pellets might take a week or so.

  Healing vibes…sounds like she is in good hands with your vet and I’m glad he’s working with you.
  
  It usually takes about 3 full days for females to really start to recover. Don’t be alarmed if she doesn’t eat in the first 24 hours she is back – she will be full of pain meds and recovering from the anesthesia. Entice her with fresh greens – this is the best. I would ask the vet about critical care as well. You may have to hand feed her the second day a bit if she’s not eating anything.
  
  Do ask the vet to give you pain meds as Beka stated.
  
  She’ll be very quiet when you get her home and my best advice is to just let her be for those first few days – she really won’t want you fussing at her. Talk to her and pet her but don’t agitate her by forcing anything on her or worrying over her.

  Make sure to keep her area extra clean too, to minimize risk of infection. And she will give you attitude after she starts feeling better, but don’t let her talk you into letting her do stuff too soon, like running and jumping.

  My female I had to hand feed to get her to eat for 3 days after surgery – I also had to hold the water bowl up to her face cause she refused to move (even on metacam). She laid out on the A/C vent so a cool area would be nice to offer.

  Those are excellent questions to ask your vet as well. Do not hesitate to ask as many as you want, take notes, and call him once she’s home. Since it was a spay done due to a medical condition, he may have advice more specific to her over and above our suggestions. He sounds wise and you were also by having it done right away.

  How’s Penelope doing? Did your doctor say if he found any tumor’s. Rosy goes in for her spay on the 30th so I’d like to know how Penelope handles it.

  Hey everybody. Penelope did wonderful with her surgery! She’s not quite as perky as usual but besides that she acts like nothing even happened! I guess after having her eye removed getting spayed just wasn’t that big of a deal lol The vet did say that he didn’t find any tumors but the uterus was inflamed and irritated, which was causing the blood. The hard part now seems to be keeping her from jumping around! She has an extremely large cage and even though I have closed half of it off she is still managing to move around more than I expect she should be the day of her surgery. Thank you everyone for the get well wishes!
