On this site, it’s $20 for 20 pounds. That’s pretty steep for what looks to be similar to woodstove pellets. I wouldn’t spend the money on that when there are cheaper options that work just as well or better. But I’ve always said that I’d rather spend more money on what goes IN the rabbit, than on material to absorb what comes OUT. Just my 2 cents…

I tried it about 3 years ago. I really liked the product but the bag only lasted me 2 weeks and it was so expensive. So now I use yesterdays news and I am much happier and it is alot cheaper!

$20 for 20lbs is too much for how often I clean the boxes – plus I dunno if i’d want to encourage my rabbits eating their litter by making it basically a food pellet. Would be good for buns that nibble on everything though, I guess.

That’s what I’ve been using all along, and I’m very happy with it. It’s scoopable, so I only have to remove one tiny area of soiled litter each morning since Hodari prefers to pee exclusively in the left-hand corner. A bag lasts us a long time that way. We use a Binky Bunny litter screen over it, which minimizes her consumption of it. It does a good job with odor control, too, and is nice because it doesn’t leave any residue behind in the litter box; it scoops out very cleanly and we just compost it. It’s more economical than it seems. We wouldn’t be using it otherwise.

I used to use it, but due to the cost and due to the fact that one of my rabbits wanted to eat it, I stopped using it. I use Aspen Supreme combined with Yesterday’s News now. I know that it is made of straw and is safe to be eaten, but I was afraid that my rabbit was eating less hay when he was eating the litter pellets. I still had part of a bag left and over the weekend I decided to use a little in the litter box , kind of hiding it beneath some other litter. Early this morning, I see my rabbit sitting outside the litter box, reaching in to get and eat the Oxbow litter pellets. He is very determined.

I found Aspen Supreme at Petco, the actual store, plus they have it online. I know that it’s more expensive than the wood stove pellets. The size bags that I got were 455 cubic inch, which seems to me to be about 10 pounds. On the Petco website, they sell it in 10 and 20 pound bags. Right now they are on sale, $9.43 for 10 pounds and $13.70 for 20 pounds. I bought my bags a few months ago and didn’t start using them until recently because someone had given me a bag of wood stove pellets. I don’t know if they were closing out the Aspen Supreme at Petco or what, but I think that I only paid around $6 for the 455 cubic inch/10 pound bags.

I just read that they discontinued Yesterday’s News Litter for Rabbits but the Cat Litter is available and safe for rabbits. Have any of you tried this? I currently use Carefresh. I like it but it’s pretty pricey especially since I change it out everyday.

I haven’t been able to find the Yesterday’s News for rabbits in a while, so I do get the (unscented) cat version. The rabbit version was more expensive and looked identical to the cat version. There was a ferret version that I got one time which also looked identical to the others. Evidently, Purina made one type of recycled newspaper pellet and charged more for the versions that were marketed for “exotic” animals. They have the original cat version and a new softer, lightly scented version, but I make sure to buy the unscented one. It’s unfortunately hard to find the unscented version, though. All the grocery stores that carry it only have the scented version. I checked Kmart and they only had scented. I was at PetSmart Monday night and they only had the scented version on the shelf, although it looks like they still carry the original unscented version and it was just out of stock at the time.

There was another brand of recycled newspaper pellet that I saw a few months ago at PetSmart, All Living Things Rabbit Litter. It was a better price than Yesterday’s News so I bought a bag. When I opened it, it smelled very sour, like vinegar. I did not think that my rabbits woud want to sit on and smell that so I returned it and got a refund. I wondered if it just happened to be the one bag that I got that smelled bad, but I see that one of the reviewers on petsmart.com also complained about the smell.

I never realized there was a rabbit version for yesterday’s news. (was it just smaller pellets?) Anyway, I have always used the cat version (unscented).
I also like to combine it with Aspen Supreme when I am able.

I never compared the cat and rabbit pellets side by side, but they sure seemed the same to me, just placed in a different bag. The rabbit version was in an orange bag. And the ferret version, which also seemed the same, was in a blue bag. Both the rabbit and ferret versions have been discontinued. Actually, I guess just the bags themselves have been discontinued, since the formulas were undoubtedly all the same.

I found these 2 aspen pellets online yesterday but it might be only available on the east coast. Not sure.
