Tait’s neuter is set for August 23rd YAYY, and Thank God!! He is sooooo stinky and has peed on the floor a couple times in the last month. So I’m probably going to get him tattooed, I don’t think I’ll get him microchipped though. Just wondering on peoples thoughts and who does/doesn’t have theirs tattooed or microchipped???

I would not tattoo if you live in the US- I don’t think there is a universal database for tattoo’d rabbits for owner info to be looked up- so I don’t think a tattoo would be useful at all. Microchipping is universal and worth doing.

I live in Canada, I know the SPCA here tattoos all their rabbits, so I would think there is something here. I never thought about that though, so I should ask at work and see.

Microchipping is less painful for the bun, and easier to get info on if your bun gets lost. All shelters would have something to scan for a chip, whereas a tattoo may not be as well documented.

Tattoos are more for breeder identification for shows or to show spay/neuter status. You wouldn’t be able to put enough info on a tattoo to identify where he belongs… and what if that info changes? With microchipping, you can update the database if you move or get a new phone number.

I agree, tattooing is for show rabbits as it is required that they have an ear number, if they are nuetered they cant be shown so there really isnt a point if you live in the US for a tattoo.

If you are concerned about getting your rabbit IDed I would go with a microchip. Its about the size of a grain of rice and they inject it under the skin between the shoulder blades. I havnt had it done on my rabbit (been thinking about it), but I have had it done on all of the cats that I have owned. they of course dont like the injection but after that they could care less they act like its not even there.

I imagine that the SPCA does tattoo’s denoting spay and neuter dates as Beka mentioned – I helped at a rescue that did that – N for neuter and S for spay and the year it was done – it was just easier to keep up with knowing the rabbit was altered and when but you wouldn’t know it was actually from the sanctuary – it wasn’t an ID.

Well I think I’ll probably microchip him then, I hate having to microchip little puppies at work but i wouldn’t be doing him myself . I’ve seen the rabbits tattoos at my SPCA, because I’m the volunteer in charge of them, and they are the standard ones that every vet gives in my province, 3 letters IDing the shelter/clinic and 3 numbers IDing the animal.

You can have him chipped during the neuter while he’s still groggy and it may not be so painful.

Yeah that’s what we do normally, but we have soooo many breeders in my town that we constantly have fully awake puppies that are just a few weeks old to do it on

Glad you picked the microchip… having seen the tattooing process, I know it is extremely painful for the rabbits.
Not to mention they can fade or smear during healing unlike a microchip.
