So. My husband and I finally got hold of enough moolah to go buy some NIC grids and build our Flopsy a great big condo. Thing is, Flopsy doesn’t seem to be able to figure out that the ramp on the first floor goes up to the second floor. I put him on the second floor, but he couldn’t figure out that the ramp was a way down to the first floor. I tried kind of herding him over to the ramp but he just got scared and darted to the other side of the condo. Any suggestions on a method of teaching the Flops how to get between floors? There’s also a third floor, but my husband hasn’t yet had time to construct a set of boxes for Flopsy to use as launchpads up to it.

I also wondered if anyone had ideas for cheap homemade toys. Someone over in Behavior suggested a phonebook for Flopsy to rip up (excellent idea, will certainly be stealing my parents’ in the very near future), but if anyone wants to give us any more ideas, they will be most welcome.

Try putting a treat part way up the ramp, he may be able to smell it and work his way to it

Did you put him on both the second and the first floor? When I first put my buns, I put then on the second floor and they would not go up or down. I had to put then on each floor but give them time on each. For example, once they get comfortable on the second, bring them down to the first. They will (hopefully) want to go find their comfort spot on the second floor. Also, just give him time. Don’t know how many days your bun has been in the condo but it took 3-4 days for mine to get comfortable to go to all floors.

If you don’t have a ramp (for your 3rd floor), you can put a small step initially and eventually take it away, depending on the height of the floor..

I put everything Riley needed (food, water and litterbox) on the main floor (bottom) of the cage, and just let him find his way to the second and third floor on his own. I don’t have ramps, he just jumps the 14″ between the levels, but he has become more and more comfortable with it.

If the ramp is made of wire, you might try covering it with some carpet he can use for traction. The front door of our cage could double as a ramp to get outside, but Peppy prefers to jump over it all together.

Thanks for the suggestion, Monkeybun, I will try making a trail of banana pieces (AKA bunny crack!) up the ramp to entice him. miaeih, yes, I’ve tried putting him on both the first and second floors, but he doesn’t seem to understand that there’s a way to go between them. Molzy, so far he’s been hanging out just on the first floor, so that’s where we’ve kept all his stuff. Marshall91, the ramp is covered in a sturdy, low-pile carpet that he can’t get his little teefies into (although he loves gnawing on the wooden trim at the door of the condo).

Also what’s up with everybody’s username beginning with an ‘M’ in here? O.O
