Sooo, I am now “fostering” a new bun. We are going to see how it works out before I officially adopt him. Toby is a white Lionhead with harlequin markings (I wil post pics tomorrow, he honestly does not look real!) and the minute I saw his pic I was in love. However, this was not planned and well, I am praying it goes smoothly. If not, Toby has to go back. He and Tillie did great at the rescue and on the car ride home (same carrier). They did great upon returning home in the bathroom. He mounted her a few times and Tillie was frozen and looked scared to death. She thumped quite a few times. She has not been spayed yet (Toby has been fixed) so she is just a bit old ball of hormones. The rescue told me if the bathroom encounter went well, to see how they did in Tillies “territory”. Tillie wanted no part of him anywhere in the game room she has run of.

I am wondering how long of a process this will be with her not being spayed yet. She cannot be fixed until late Aug/early Sept. Has anyone successfully bonded a unfixed female with a neutered male? I have him on a NIC cage (only 2×3) and then I will penn the area around his cage. I did this tonight and Tillie kept running over to the gate, sniffing and then she would run in circles. I really hope I am doing the right thing for Tillie (and us). I hate that I always second guess myself.

It is very hard to bond if one is not fixed. The female can be, and will be territorial and is not likely going to get along with the other bunny.

It is highly advised to wait until she is spayed, and wait a month until her hormones settle down and try to bond them.

Well, that sucks to hear. But what sucks even more is that the rescue did not seem to think it would be a major issue. Crap!

Agreed. Better to wait til she is spayed. Females can get very aggressive and territorial.

Also, how long ago was he neutered?

He is such a beautiful boy! Take this time to get to know him and give him lots of loving! He deserves it after being in a rescue for so long. Then once Tillie is spayed and healed (a month after the spay), you can start the bonding sessions.

I do hope that even if the bonding doesn’t go as planned, you will consider keeping him. He seems like a sweet boy who deserves a forever home.

Oh my! He is absolutely adorable! He looks like he is settling in well. Good luck! I am waiting for my female to be old enough to be spayed also, so I can bond my pair. They get along great through the bars.

I wish mine got along great through the bars. Tillie is not a happy bunny and keeps pooping a line along the gate. She is darn hormonal!!

from personal experience, I got sophie before either her or Cady were neutered/spayed, I held off on them meeting until after, they both healed pretty quick so I slowly started introducing them after about 2 weeks and I was extremely lucky so you never know!! if you really love this boy then bonding could be tougher but well worth it!

                                  Beautiful!

I agree with the others that trying to bond before Tillie is spayed will probably not go well. I’d just hold off and enjoy bonding with him on your own before you bond him to Tillie. Having time to get to know him better will be good for both of you!

Woke up to an interesting situation. Toby has his own room. At night I gate off Toby’s room and Tillie gets penned in around her condo. I heard little feets running around this morning and when I went to investigate (thinking Toby was just being happy-go-lucky and binkying) I see Tillie IN Toby’s room! WTH??!! Her penned in area was secure and I have NO idea how she managed to escape. There was some fur bits here and there but I have looked over both buns and they are fine. Most interesting thing of all? They were lying side by side! Unreal.

But Tillie is pretty wound up, so I have them separated again. She is sooo darn hormonal and, at times, is constantly pestering Toby. He is worn out. I did see him try to groom her, but I don’t feel comfortable leaving them alone (though there is no telling how long they were alone before I found them). I wish I could get Tillie fixed like, tomorrow! Sigh.
