        Hello Guys,

I came home tonight and found tons of ants in my bunnies litterboxes.  Has anyone had this problem before?  I can’t imagine what the ants could be in there for.  At first I thought they were after water, but they haven’t gone near their crocks; just in the litterboxes.  It doesn’t seem to bother my bunnies at all, but it’s bothering me. Is there any way I can get rid of them without harming my babies or just deal with it?

        Thanks.

I would recommend that you deal with the ant problem- figure out where they are coming from. I occasionally have ants get into our family room where the bunnies are by our sliding glass door to outside. I just put an ant trap under the rug (so the bunnies, cats or dogs could not get to it) and it cleared the problem up.
So don’t treat the litterboxes- find out where they are coming in and develop your plan on action based on that area.

It seems to be a bad year for ants, I have them as well and used traps in the kitchen(this is where the door to the apartment is and where they were coming in), to kill them off. So far I haven’t seen nearly as many as I was in the last few weeks!

Ants have always been a problem in my house, but I’ve never had them in the bunny room. It looks like they are coming in from the hallway. They are usually in the kitchen and bathrooms. I guess they are trying to be clever and coming in the house from another source. So far, I haven’t seen any more but will keep my eye out. Thanks.

A great way to get ants to leave areas alone is take terro ant bait and place it where the buns can’t get to it – they’ll go for the terro instead. I had a HORRIBLE ant problem this year in our new house – they broke our A/C unit by building a nest, they built a nest in our mailbox (ew!), they infested the kitchen and began invading the living room and no amount of cleaning helped… but put terro outdoor baits and in door baits down and within a few weeks, no more ants \o/ and while they were eating the poison, they were leaving my animals alone.

Be careful with it though if you do try, as it is basically syrup and borax so all types of animals want to eat it if they can get to it.

Thanks for that suggestion Stickerbunny! I brought some today at Ace Hardware and will use it when I see ants. The funny thing is they don’t bother the bunnies, but it’s upsetting me to see them in their space! And the fact that they all are shedding at the same time is driving me crazy!

We’ve had ants in the rabbit pen before. We live in such a heavily wooded area that insects are just par for the course. They were just the standard little black ants and I would suck them up with a hand vac a couple times a day. Eventually, they were gone.

Make sure all treats and dry food is completely sealed to prevent infestation. When we were having our ant issue, I had a bag of dried banana chips by the bunny pen… I thought it was sealed… well that bag filled up with ants. It was a whole lot of “ICK!”
