I didn’t think bunny poop had much of a smell, but lately Peppy has been producing some potent stuff.  It smells like body odor, and seems to happen most when we have visitors.  So charming. It looks like normal poop, maybe just a little wet but not runny or grape-like, and just *reeks*!  Is this normal territorial behavior, or do I need to look at her diet?

She’s about four months old and not yet spayed.  We have a vet visit on Saturday, and will schedule the spay if all goes well.

I have a female rabbit and never experienced smelly poops. I’m not sure about other females, but it is certainly a possibility

A little wet means it could be fresh poops.

Smelly, slightly damp poops does sound like territorial un-altered bun poops. They are definitely much smellier than altered bun poops.

At 4 months, she is a little young still to be spayed. Are you sure she’s a she? Quite often there’s a surprise ins tore when they get checked to be fixed

I have a male rabbit who does the same thing. I’m pretty sure it’s territorial because he only leaves these presents in my fiance’s space and is otherwise spot-on with the litterbox… He’s getting neutered soon, so I’m kind of hoping that it will stop after that, but for now I just keep an eye on him. I don’t know if female rabbits do the same thing, but the poop you describe sounds like the poop Remmy gives my fiance.

Yep, both females and males will do this. Territorial marking poop is typically scattered and has a sheen to it. It’s the shiny coating that is smelly. Perhaps she feels the guests are invading her space.

Lulu does this all the time now, leaving smelly presents all around the house and in the community litter box. Before I got the new baby she was perfect with her box, now when she’s out I have to follow her around with a broom. I got her from a shelter and they swear she is spayed. She’s almost two years old.

Thanks for all the replies – I’m glad it’s not her veggies! I’ve noticed it mostly when there has been a new person in her room. We had a friend house sit this weekend and my nephew in her room last night, so she may be a little unsettled. Monkeybun, I’m not absolutely sure she’s a female, but there has been no evidence to the contrary yet. I’m prepared for that possibility though.

Yes, there is no other smell in the world like unneutered male bunny. Quite the odor… The sooner he gets neutered, the sooner that should dissipate.
