my crazy, crazy bunnies always create a huge hay explosion in their area. I sweep it up, vacuum, and it’s all easy to do.. but it’s so time consuming! I put their hay in a straw basket thing, but they pull the hay out and it’s all over the place and then they end up chewing on the basket and leaving remnants of that too lol. what do you guys do with your bunnies hay? and how do you keep from having hay splattered all over their area?
I put a blanket or a sheet down in the areas that they tend to mess the worst, and if I have someone coming by Ill pick it up but it makes it much easier to bring it outside and shake out…
I have fleece blankets down in their pens where they get their hay so I can shake them outside before I wash the blankets- that and vacuuming, lots of vacuuming.
Their litterboxes have high walls, and I put their hay in there. They poop on one side and eat hay from the other. The high walls contain the hay pretty well.
after 7 years,, i JUST got the willow hay racks from the binkybunny store,, now i can take the individual segments from the BB minibales and put them upright in it so that they can choose which kind they want to eat. so far oat hay is in the lead.
oooh, I tried putting a fleece blanket down but the hay just got stuck on that -___- haha. maybe I’ll get a more slippery [that’s not the right word I’m looking for… non-clingy? haha] fabric and try that.
miaeih : are those hay racks $65?!?
Hay is a never ending battle when i think I found something good the bunnies prove me wrong.
Chacha does the exact same thing, messy girl. I have an IKEA plastic bag holder that is in her condo. I throw some hay in it.

Something like that. Mine is smaller so I’m not sure if it was the same price. I got mine since I adopted my buns from SAB and figured I was donating extra to the shelter. That said, it’s a really nice box. Mine was used (it was my buns’ box at the shelter) and is still very solid. There are a few nibbles on it but I think they gave up since it’s not tastey and very hard to destroy so it’s premanent compared to other kind of holders. The bottom has rubber feet to keep the base slightly off the floor but not too high so the buns can’t get under and chew the feet. I only clean their condo floor once a week and there’s hardly any mess so I recommend it if you have extra $.
We have a hay rack that hangs from outside of the pen. Hay was all over the floor around the pen until I tied a piece of cloth from to the bars and rolled it over the hay rack from the upper side. It worked for me – there’s no more hay outside. Inside the pen I have a small carpet (similar material as those in cars, not rubber) – it’s easy to clean, I just sweep it off. Not sure though it’s a good thing if bunny is a carpet lover. Eva doesn’t nibble the fabric.
I’ve pretty much just accepted that with 3 rabbits my house will always be covered in hay…sigh
I have a plastic bottom pet store cage and their litter boxes and all hay stay in there – it helps contain the hay pretty well and keeps it out of the rest of the pen area and the house.
Like Mint, I also have a high litter box and seems to keep the place pretty clean. Of course, there are bits and pieces that come out but a quick vacuum does the trick!
I only have two rabbits, but like LittlePuffyTail, I’m pretty much resigned to having hay scattered in my house and on my screened porch where my bunnies spend a lot of time.
I have two rabbits but mine are really good about their hay… the boy gets his in his litter boxes and on a cardboard sheet I have on the floor for him. The girl has a cardboard sheet on her floor where she gets her hay. Neither of them scatter it beyond that. Guess I should be glad my buns are so neat 😮
The cardboard sheets I use are about 2ft by 5ft and they go on the floor, I can just tip them over the litterbox to clean the hay bits off them. And they are chew/dig toys too
boyfriend gets them free from his work lol
You mean…

This kind of haysplosion?
This is Moosie’s mess. Which happens less than a day after cleaning his pen. Never fails. Can’t contain it at all lol.

LOL!! that’s where I am, with my two. monkeybun’s picture is hilariously accurate!
their cage itself already has their water, pellet feeder, and litterbox.. although since they have their own little play area the entire cage has become a litterbox haha. as long as they’re not going outside of it, fine by me. but I’m not sure if I can find a space to put their hay in there..
perhaps I’ll get a high walled litterbox like some of you mentioned and put their hay in there. hopefully it’ll contain it. knowing these two… it probably won’t ![]()
Moosie has been teaching Squirrel the Way of the Mess it seems. Squirrels pen looks rather similar to Moosie’s right now…
I put the bulk of the hay in the cage so if Remmy pulls it and spreads it around it stays contained. If it’s outside the cage, the hay is in an open box or toilet paper tube. Pulling hay out of the tube is fun, just like pulling it out of the feeder. The tube holds less hay though, so it’s a smaller mess.
