Because of the current size of Leo’s cage, we have to use an empty clear storage container as a litterbox. It has enough room for him to strech out in and everything, but I would like to get a roomier one and one with taller sides. The former is why I began to notice a yellow spot on the floor and beside the box. There had been over-spillage in the cage, on the wall, and on the floor!!  I cleaned it all up with vinegar and water, but my sis and I scrambled to find a solution. Sooo…this was born!    It’s a wrap-around cardboard “urine guard,” with added chews! I used the string for the shredder and a willow stick strung through the kabob to secure the cardboard to the wall. The walls don’t extend all the way around the box, just the back and one side. So far, it works and he loves it! I might do it in his bigger cage, too, just for fun Here’s another pic::

That looks good, and cozy which a bunny likes.
I would suggest that, while you have it fresh in your mind and the cardboard and tools around, cut about a half a dozen more and store they away. The cardboard will soak up any pee and it might get nasty pretty fast, so if he still does it you may need to change it out in a hurry. This way, you’ll have a fresh supply until he stops.

Also, a small or medium cat pan is a good alternative, as is a kitchen dish pan (rubbermaid I think) that you use in a kitchen sink to wash dishes in separately from the actual sink, if you want other possible sized litter boxes that are inexpensive. I think I paid $5 at Target for a cat pan last time, and the same one was twice that at the box pet store.

That is cool! I have to buy Riley the largest cat pans I can find, because otherwise he accidently pees over the edge, but that is really cool!

Cardboard is sooo useful! That’s a cosy little corner for him now. I often think I should pop my rabbits litter trays in a cardboard box to extend the sides a bit. Haven’t done so yet though.
I laughed that one kabob is all healthy fruit and veg….then topped with a hamburger. haha.

I notice you’ve got litter or bedding around outside of the litterbox also? Leo might already be good with his litterbox but if you are having trouble, take out the bedding stuff. It’s less confusing for them and bedding is not really necessary. It will save you litter and make cleaning his cage a whole lot easier also.

Thanks so much everybody! Rabbitpam, that’s a great idea to have extras! Never thought of that, I’ll probably go make a bunch now. Hopefuly we will have the big cage before long so I can just put the cardboard in for fun, but for now that seems like a very sensible solution. I probably should have bought a cat box in the first place, but the first night we got him we had to take shelter from a severe storm so kind of just threw something in there. The next day I dropped over a hundred bucks of christmas money buying a cartload of stuff for him and found out that the litter box I got was too big!  Anyway, he uses that one when he’s out playing and too lazy to go back in the cage, and I’ll use the big box in the new cage Jerseygirl, LOL at the hamburger comment! I saw that in the store and it cracked me up enough to buy it, and now he barely chews it. Funny thing is, he only really nibbles on the lettuce of the burger, and I certainly can’t blame him!  Thanks for the advice on the bedding as well; I checked the bedding to see if he had been confusing the bedding for litter. Thankfully all of his messes have been in the box, and he keeps the rest of his place clean. However, when we build his condo we will have a (probably) linoleum floor with a few blankies for traction. Does this sound like a good plan? Thanks again for all the good advice!
