I’m supposed to be going camping for a couple of days coming up. I have no idea what is best for the bun. I have the option of my aunt keeping her for the few days I’m gone. If I do that, I’m not sure what I should do about housing her. Should I get a temporary cage like what they sell at pet stores for people getting rabbits? I know that those cages are too small to use on a regular basis, but I’m not sure what else I can do to house her. I hate taking her out of the house anyway as she is so comfy here.

Anyone have any input on what you’ve done for housing your bunny while away? Whatever I get will need to have enough room for her to have a litter box and such.

You could buy one of the dog crates they sell in pet stores for a travel cage for her – get a large one and it would have enough room for a litter box, you could add a detachable shelf for a second level and they are secure enough that bun can’t get free. The cages they sell for rabbits generally aren’t even big enough for a litter box.

I have a dog crate that I use. It’s not huge, but it folds up, which is awesome for traveling. And for a couple of days, I don’t think it’s that bad to be a little squished. Mine is like 30×24 I think, so it’s big enough for a litter box, a straw mat, and his food and water. I got mine at the local Fleet Farm for like $50, so I think cost wise it’s even cheaper than the store bought bunny cages.

A dog crate is a great idea because, as already stated, they are collapsible (for storage after the trip, plastic cages are hard to store), very sturdy, entirely protected (especially useful if others in the house are bringing their pets), and there is a crate bottom to protect the floor. I would definitely recommend one for a vacation. You would still use your regular pet carrier for the ride there and back. If you are going to be doing trips often, I think the dog crate would be a great investment.

My bunny is a Dutch and we travel to the mountains quite frequently and take her along. I’ve found that just plastic dog/cat crates work very well. They don’t have enough room for a litter box in them, but if you’re like me you’re bunny only uses her crate for travel and sleeping. In the day she runs around and uses her litter box. I change the bedding every other day so it doesn’t get filthy if she does need to go to the bathroom in there.

We take an xpen with us – those pet store cages are just too big to fit easily in the car (we have a 4’x2′ one that really doesn’t fit, and a smaller one that does fit, but we wouldn’t keep our bunnies in it – we just have it because Hannah came with it). Anyway, the pen folds down easily in the trunk and then we bring a vinyl table cloth to go under it to make hay clean up easier and make sure the bunnies don’t destroy the flooring at the house they’re visiting.

Guys, I left her at home with a sitter. It went fine and all, but I NEVER want to leave her again. I was in serious withdrawl/worry. Never again!

Aww :'( It can be very sad. I always worry about my buns when I leave them with a sitter.
