So, I moved into a new apartment in January, and Riley had been living in a dog crate since then. I had a bunch of NIC panels back home in Minnesota, but I hadn’t gotten back there to get them. Once I moved in, I found I had enough room for an NIC cage, so this past weekend when I went home, I grabbed my panels. Then off to Lowe’s for some pegboard (for the floors) and then to Menards for carpet tiles. Riley is a terrible chewer of fabric, so I am hoping he will leave the carpet panels alone. They have adhesive backs, so they stuck fairly well to the pegboard, though I might reinforce it with a little hot glue tomorrow (I don’t have a hot glue gun right now).

Anyways, the cage is 3×2 panels, and 3 panels high. Very nice for a 3# bunny! He is loving jumping up to the other levels, especially now that I put the carpeting in (he had the pegboard only for the first few days because no store in town had carpet tiles, so I had to make the trip to Des Moines for a Menards!). He can grip the floor a lot better now, and I think that makes him more confidant jumping from level to level! He seems so much happier with the extra space, he actually goes back into his cage when out and about to rest.

        Now – pictures!

Riley lounging on the bottom floor this afternoon before I added the carpet. Please ignore all the stray poops – he has been marking the new cage as HIS so that I know not to take it away!

The new cage, complete with carpeted levels! You can see RIley in the corner about to go in to investigate!

Closeup of the bottom half of the cage. The levels are made with NIC grids and zip-ties, with pegboard on top of them. I might add some reinforcement later at the front of the levels so that they don’t bow at all, but since Riley is only 3 pounds it seems to support him just fine.

The top of the cage. Ignore the roof caving in a little, I had to cut some of the zip ties to get the peg board back in and out for the carpet tiles, and I hadn’t replaced the zip ties yet!

All in all, I have a VERY happy bun, and a happy owner to boot! Now fingers crossed that he doesn’t bother the carpeting at all!

They are fun to make, and pretty easy too! I did this by myself because I live alone, but it would probably be easier with two people.

I just built a condo for my bunny, too and need to post a pic. You did a great job! I like the idea of using the pegboard, I’m sure it’s much easier to deal with than plywood. And I love your hay rack! Where did you get it?

Thanks Misdh! The pegboard was super easy, and the people at Lowe’s cut it for me for free which was awesome. I’m not sure if it has any chemicals or things on it that are bad, but since I covered it with carpet and Riley isn’t a wood chewer I’m not too worried. It was cheaper than plywood too, only $7!

The hay rack is from Leith Petwerks (www.leithpetwerks.com). I LOVE it! It has a solid back, so the hay doesn’t fall out the back of the cage. It hooks onto the cage bars with little “C” hooks, so you can easily take it out and hold it over your hay bin to fill it, so it keeps my carpet a lot cleaner. He makes two sizes, and I got the smaller one since Riley is only a little guy. It gives him enough hay for about 2-3 days if I really pack it in.
