I ‘m aware that I have mice in my house, I am fairly OK with that because we are clean and we never have any problems with them eating up or food and just try to prevent leaving food on the counters…except when they die inside a wall! Maybe I have rats too but I searched it and I don’t think I do because it would’ve been obvious..O_O But I was wondering if they can be harmful to my rabbit???

My rabbit Binksy is almost 3 months old, but still a baby for now, a netherland dwarf. I was googling about wild rats and rabbits and read some horror stories  but they were mostly regarding rabbits who were kept outdoors. And I’m not sure exactly what kind of wild rats were in each experience because there are different views… I read that rats cannot transmit diseases to rabbits and in another case that mice bit a rabbit? Or it could’ve been a rat. I am a bit worried.. I read the biggest attraction to rats is bird feed on the floor and my mom HAPPENS to put bird feed at the front yard for her wild birds and leaves them there. Though we don’t have those obvious signs of rats in our house.

ALSO, could the litterbox full of hay and open cage attract mice? If so, what should I do? o-o

They say don’t leave food around but sometimes Binksy does his binkies and causes hay to fall onto the floor, and his veggies sometimes end up on the floor. When I wake up, there is a mess. I think a very small mice could fit into Binksy’s pen area…I keep his cage door open so he can play in his pen and do his binkying around 4am-7am lol while I am asleep. His pen area is in the kitchen too (where mice would want to be..) because that is where we have the most space …

        Thanks for reading!

I’m don’t know if mice can harm rabbits in any way (transmitting diseases, etc).  But the best thing to do would be to set up some traps around the pen area or in your kitchen.  There are humane traps you can get.  I found this one amazon:

Hay definately attracts them. It’s what brought mice into my place. Pretty certain that’s how Jersey and Rumball got fur mites too. My vet said fur mite most commonly brought via mice and birds. You want to keep watch for that. Even talk to your vet about giving Binksy a preventative dose of Revolution. Mice don’t really hang out in a place that’s going to be disturbed alot like a litter box though. It’s more where you store hay. I had mine in a big box near the house and that attracted them. The then made their way inside.

Someone on here said mice or rats can be attracted to the rabbit dropping also.

When I had mice I caught them in a humane trap. Once I had them out of the house I checked over areas I thought they could get in and blocked them off with steel wool. I also used peppermint oil on a cotton ball as a deterrant. I only had 2-3 mice (or possibly same one came back in) so it wasn’t too hard to deal with them.

Thanks jerseygirl. I heard a lot of good things about the peppermint oil and wrote it down for a reminder to buy it..I also have heard about the rabbit poop attracting rats. That rats supposedly go crazy for rabbit poop?? So I stopped pouring it in the garden just in case -_- funny story when I first got Binksy, I saw a green aphid or tiny tiny bug carrying away his one pill of poop and the pill was 5x its size lol.
I keep his hay in a plastic bun, away from his pen. Rats can’t get into anyway but I am going to put peppermint cotton balls around it and around the outside of his pen.
I am also worried about the fur mites (was just googling it after I checked this thread haha).. I decided I am going to keep Binksy in his cage and keep it closed, until the problem isn’t that much of a problem.

We had a major mouse problem at my house a year or so ago. I have birds too, so there was always seed and stuff on the ground, even if I vacuumed a couple times a day (which obviously isn’t always possible since I am not always home!).

For me, things got serious when I found mouse poo in my bird’s cages. EWW! Not to mention they can be dangerous, especially to a tiny bird! I ended up putting Riley (the rabbit) in a small cage that I could place up off the ground so that the mice couldn’t get to it, and then placing traps all over the house. Sadly we had crazy smart mice (we watched them physically jump over the traps to avoid them, despite yummy peanut butter and cheese!), so we eventually had to resort to poison, in order to keep my babies safe. I hated doing it (I don’t even like snap traps), but my feathered and furry baby’s health had to come first!

After we had the problem under control, my Mom looked into getting an exterminator out to the house to go around the outside of the house and find the little cracks and holes the mice can get into to hopefully prevent them getting in in the future. They can get in tiny holes you can’t even see. We haven’t had a problem since, but I also moved out with the animals, which I think were a major attractant to the mice.
