My rabbit’s estimated age is around 6, although everyone (including the vet) thinks he is probably younger. My sister is adopting a rabbit and we would like to bond them, however I’ve heard stories of rabbits becoming depressed after they have outlived their friend. I’m also worried about stressing my bun too much. Would bonding the rabbits be a bad idea?

I would only bond a rabbit if you intend for them to be bonded for life. I’m not sure how old you are (if you are younger than 18, please don’t post your age) but life changes, and you do NOT want to break up a bond. That will make a rabbit depressed.

Some rabbits may become depressed after losing a friend, but it is our duty to make sure that the rabbit still alive gets lots of loves. It will take time, but it does not mean that they will forever be depressed.

I definitely don’t think that 6 is too old to bond a rabbit since rabbits can live into their teens.

Six is not too old, and having a bonded companion at an older age can actually be beneficial as the rabbit begins the aging process and may experience health issues. While not necessary, I think it is always worth it to bond a rabbit if you can, and if the rabbit is accepting of a new companion.

My concern is, as ChaCha mentioned, once bonded, they are bonded until one or the other passes. They must live in the same habitat, share exercise time, etc… So the decision needs to be made who will be primarily responsible for the pair.

I agree with the other posters. Generally it doesn’t work out for two people to bond their own rabbits together. Unless you know that you and your sister will be living together for the next 5-6 years, minimum, you should probably keep your bunnies single.

Thanks for the advice! Sounds like I will be adopting another rabbit and keep the pair together.
