I’ve been planning on building Rory a bunny condo as I’ve seen so many others here do. However, as Rory is my only bunny and will probably remain that way for the forseeable future, I was wondering if it would be out of the question to downsize the condo to 28″ tall instead of 42″ (2 grids instead of 3), for financial and space reasons. I don’t want to sound miserly about Rory’s comfort, but if I can save a few dollars, I really need to.

What floor dimensions are you going to do? The smallest horizontal space I’d recommend is 4×2 grids. For a single bunny, 4×2 grids and 2 grids high should be alright,as long as he can stand fully upright and gets plenty of exercise time each day.

I was planning on a minimum of 3×2 floor, but 4×2 wouldn’t be out of the question. He’s not very big (4.5lb) and I doubt he’ll be getting much larger as he’s already 18 months old. I just want him to have a large enough place to move around comfortably, as well as at least one shelf to jump up and down from. The reason I’d thought bringing the dimensions down to 3×2 grid floor x 2 grid high would be enough for him alone was every example of the “standard” condo size (that shown on rabbitcondo.com) was for 2 rabbits.

We recommend 2×4 feet horizontal space minimum PER rabbit. So a bonded pair would need 4×4 feet of horizontal space, not counting any levels. 3×2 for two buns is far too small. If you can do 2×4 right now, I’d do it. It’s easier to do it now than to change your mind later on and then want to expand it.
