Well my buns need more room and living in a one bedroom apartment, I don’t have many options that don’t take up massive amounts of space so I’m going to convert the closet. The closet is carpeted, and my buns are litter trained but I’m worried about maybe accidents happening and if perhaps I should make a coroplast pan in the bottom of the closet. Opinions?

        Thanks!

In my bunnys cage I used a carpet rug as the floor and he seems to never have accidents regardless that the floor is carpet…. He also roams around my room that is carpet and always goes to his litter box to pee.. so it never seemed to be a problem when he become litter trained

I’ve seen a couple of member do a set up like you’re thinking of. One I remember they used a sheet of floor vinyl to line the floor and up the inside of the closet.

ETA:  This is KytKattins bunny Nova. You can see the viynl goes part way up the wall. She has used panels in front of it to prevent it being chewed I believe.

Is the closet ventilated? If not, it will get very hot and very cold in there. And it can also be very dark unless the room is well lit.

Of course the closet is ventilated and well lit.

Thanks for the suggestions inspiring and jerseygirl My buns really hate linoleum flooring so I’m not sure how they’d take to the vinyl, I’ll have to look at it.

Another great flooring option is the indoor-outdoor carpeting from Menards or Home Depot. I got a big roll of it for $10, and was able to cut it into two pieces, so that I could wash one while using the other. You could put linoleum down, and then put the carpet on top of that – my bun hates linoleum too, so I used this when his pen was on tile so that he could still run around and binky. You can either wash it in the wash machine or hose it off outside, I did both depending on the weather and the mess on it (usually hosed it off to get hay mess off, but I would wash it if he accidentaly peed over his litter box or something).

I don’t know if I have a picture of it or not, but it’s sold as a giant rug basically.

That’s a great idea. I’ll look into that! I think that’d be a lot easier since my buns don’t seem to have any peeing issues. When you put it in the wash what do you run the washer on to really thoroughly clean it? Thanks a lot!

Thats what i use! Its so much less the mess and the pellets they leave on the carpet you can use a hand vac and suck it t up! most def Less clean up!

To really clean it, I take it outside and power wash it. In the winter, I use a shop vac before I wash it, because otherwise the hay tends to stay stuck on it or in my washer .

I got a piece larger than my pen so that the edges were out of Riley’s reach – he did destroy one of them once when my Mom was bun-sitting though and moved the pen to the edge of the rug, so that is something to watch for. Luckily for $10 I just got two more!

I finished converting the closet! I’ll take some pictures soon for those who are interested. I’m going to end up buying a new baby gate because this one doesn’t fit quite right. They seem to really be enjoying their new larger space! They keep darting around in circled and doing the little head bob looking around.

Here’s a quick pic I snapped. The dishes and hay are on the other end of the closet. It’s about the same width as their old cage but twice the length. They love it. And it’s great because I can actually sit inside the closet and let the run around on me. Here’s the picture:
