  I always thought that grooming behavior reflects dominance…so petting a bun shows that she’s “the boss,” and is one more reason why they like it.
  
  Sophie doesn’t want to be petted, but she doesn’t act like she hates to be touched. She comes right up and nudges me now, and hops up onto my leg sometimes, but she hops back if I try to pet her. Not scared, just as though she’s saying, “No thanks! I’m all set!” However, she LOVES to groom me now. She’ll come up and lick my face and hands all over and “comb” my hair, and after one squeal, she’s always careful to be gentle.
  
  But I don’t get it! Why doesn’t she want me to return the favor? Sometimes she nudges under my hand, like she thinks she’d like it, but she always very politely declines and offers to do me instead.

  Eva is a little groomer to and I get licked all over my face and neck, but she likes to be petted as well. Her favorite spots are between the eyes and ears and under her front legs (armpits). But she doesn’t like when I put my whole hand on her, just one or two fingers. Maybe that’s the thing with Sophie too. Perhaps if you try exchange – you stroke her one or two times and than offer your hand (or face) for licking and so on.

  Thane was really similar for a long time. He’d spend ages grooming me, my eyebrows especially (I think it’s a hint, haha!). Thane is a strange one. He LOVES having his cheeks rubbed and his butt. Weirdo!
  Maybe she’s just sussing you out? Also, how long have you had her?
